Farewell Dave

davegrega

Dave Grega, one of the hosts of the Pagan Centered Podcast, died Monday night. It's come as a big shock to the people who knew him. He was only 27, and had a mischievous sense of humor, so I wasn't the only person who wondered at first if it was a prank. Dave was a person who was very much alive, and it's difficult to think of him as dead. Dave had many admirable qualities and a fantastic ability to make things happen. His humor often took him to weird places and he loved debate for the … [Read more...]

Fitting Tributes: The Passing of Lord Athanor

John Monogue/Lord Athanor

Pagans having two names can have some amusing consequences. How often do you tend to know someone's mundane name or magical name, but not both? You know who Nightfire is but swear you've never met Michael, not knowing they are the same person. I recently had an experience like that. Lord Athanor is one of those elder names I hear a lot when speaking to folks from my tradition. We've got a boatload of elders and countless names from the history of Paganism in Atlanta. I've never met most of … [Read more...]

Paganism and “Passing”

I am completely overwhelmed with what I need to do for tomorrow. Turkey is thawed in the fridge, I'm trying to figure out if I have enough serving dishes and figure out the whole chair situation. I'm sure many of you are doing the same thing. Do I have enough sage? Will there be traffic? Is someone in the family going to take issue with me this year? Do I need to de-Pagan myself, my house, my kids before having dinner with family? I have something on my mind that's kind of appropriate to the … [Read more...]

The Passing of Lord Merlin

Lord Merlin, aka David John White, was the elder high priest of the Ravenwood tradition for almost three decades and he died over a week ago, on Mabon. He led an extraordinary life, much like his wife Lady Sintana, and he died a year and a week after she passed from us. He was there by the Lady to bless the founding of my coven, and when I'm initiated this Saturday he will be a part of my lineage, my spiritual grandfather. Though I never met him, his passing fills me with sadness, and more than … [Read more...]

Pagan Soup: Lord Gothwen, Geocentrism and Hephaestus Anthology

I woke up this morning intending to write a rip-roaring post but instead I found sad news waiting for me. Lord Gothwen Passes I did not know Lord Gothwen but I know he spent decades in service to the Craft. He lived in California, worked at Apple Inc and expressed regret at not being able to attend Lady Sintana's memorial. Beyond that his stories are gone forever, with the exception of memories of family and friends. He was only 52. Lady Larina of RavenStone, my "spiritual grandmother", knew … [Read more...]

Reflecting on the Life of Steve Collins/Lord Senthor

I think the saddest thing about writing for the Pagan community is writing about elders who have passed that I never had the chance to meet. The poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko said "Not people die but worlds die in them." It's an appropriate way to express the memories, knowledge and perspective lost every time someone passes from our communities. We should make a greater effort to reach out and honor our elders and record their stories before they become our ancestors. I know a lot of Pagans are … [Read more...]

Isaac Bonewits, Hail and Farewell!

This morning Pagan elder Isaac Bonewits crossed over to the Summerlands. I never really knew Isaac but like many modern Pagans I certainly felt his influence. There is a lovely eulogy for Isaac on The Wild Hunt this morning that is far more eloquent than I am capable of today. Here is also a video tribute created by ADF Vice Archdruid Seamus: I honor Isaac for his contributions to Modern Paganism, for his tireless efforts on behalf of his spiritual community and for his good humor and … [Read more...]
