Guest Post: P. Sufenas Virius Lupus’ on Unnatural Sex

PGPT_PSufenas_bio

P. Sufenas Virius Lupus writes the Queer I Stand column here on Patheos Pagan. If you like this please check out his column, as well as all of our other fine columnists and bloggers. For good or ill (and despite the best efforts of queer theory’s proponents), the word “queer” is something that people associate with sexual orientation. At the end of the day, “sexual orientation” is not so much about who one loves (as there are many kinds and definitions of love, and most queer people … [Read more...]

Active Sexual Consent (and Dissent)

With examples like Tristan and isolde, no wonder we're mixed up about consent.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Since Jonathan Korman wrote about consent, I've been giving it some deep thought. Including the comment by Niki Whiting on how women need to be educated about consent. And I've been thinking of it in context of the freak out in the atheist community over harassment, and in other freak outs that have happened in the Pagan community. I think one of the problems with consent and communication is that we tend to treat sexual attraction as some sort … [Read more...]

Beyond Roses Red and Roses White (Possibly NSFW)

Writing can become a bad habit, and a simple question can set loose a torrent of words. So when Niki Whiting asked me what I thought of Peter Grey's The Red Goddess last night, I gave a long and complex answer when a simple one would do. Now that all the words are just sitting there, I feel I should form them into a post of some sort. I should warn that there's some frank talk about sexuality in this post, and it is heteronormative. I'm not qualified to speak to any other kind of sexuality, but … [Read more...]

The Egg and Mary Magdalen

This incredible painting of the Magdalen by Richard Stodart is not only available as a print, but the original is up for sale.

When I think of Ostara, I think of eggs, and of the multi-colored egg salad that is made the day after Ostara. And when I think of Divine images associated with eggs, I always think of Mary Magdalen. Most Pagans who convert from a Christian background go through a "What do I think about Jesus?" phase. I certainly did, and devoured Margaret Starbird's books. I was able to frame my feelings regarding the Christian faith, not necessarily Christian culture, through books such as The Woman … [Read more...]

Much Ado About Gaga

Over on the Evangelical portal Karen Zacharias Spears weighed in on Lady Gaga, and I thought it all sounded a bit familiar: “Elvis can’t sing, can’t play the guitar, and can’t dance. Yet two thousand idiots per show yelp every time he opens his mouth, plucks a guitar string, or shakes his pelvis like any striptease babe in town.” -- Herb Rau, Miami Daily News, Aug. 4th, 1956 "It is a frightening thing for a man to watch his women debase themselves... It’s hardly original but if … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs – Heathenry and Abortion

Also see Galina Krasskova's and Star Foster's posts on abortion. Through the years I have been asked, especially by people outside of my religion, what stance if any that the heathen religion had on the issue of abortion. Unlike other religions (such as Christianity), there is nothing that specifically prohibits abortion within our religious worldview. Ancient Heathens took a practical, not a religious, worldview as it applied to pregnancy and children. Two things were considered in the fate … [Read more...]

Being Yourself – Not Always The Easy Path.

I have a story to tell. It is not an easy story.  I don't like this story, and I don't want to tell it; I tend to avoid it, skip over it, make light of the details.  But I feel it is the right thing to do, for the Pagan community at large, and the Heathen community in specific. But first, some of my background.  (I promise, this is information relating to my story.) I first became a Heathen in college; I had a Heathen friend, B., who invited me to all the Heathen gatherings.  Since I … [Read more...]
