Re-Interpreting “Worship” in Witchcraft

An interesting conversation came out of my post on belief yesterday and I'd like to briefly touch on it.It's nothing new that many Witches adamantly deny that the Gods are to be worshipped but rather they are equals, allies, friends or even tools. I don't agree with this but I do get a bit peeved when it's suggested "real" Witches don't worship the Gods or that it's a "Wiccan thing," with the implication that anything "Wiccan" is somehow less. Here's what bothers me about this: the lore of … [Read more...]

The Scariest Job On Earth

Ok, maybe not the scariest, but it's on up there in the toll it takes on the well-being of the worker: Pagan blogger.Oh, of all the nightmares and spectres we will tantalize ourselves with over the Halloween weekend, I'd like to float a few ghouls past you to send a chill down your spine. So grab some popcorn, dim the lights and snuggle up in your blankie as I reveal the scariest things about being a Pagan blogger. Why Being A Pagan Blogger Is ScaryObviously, as a Pagan blogger, you are a … [Read more...]

Regarding the War on Halloween

I've been joking about writing a piece on "the War on Halloween" for a few weeks now, because from a Pagan perspective it's such an absurd topic. Yet the more I joked the more it seemed a good idea. You see, the truth is, Halloween is a secular holiday. It doesn't belong to any religion. What we know as Halloween today began as an excuse for bored Edwardians to party and scare the crap out of each other. It kept going because it was fun, and after two World Wars the West needed an excuse for … [Read more...]

Traditional Witchcraft on the Internet

I get some weird messages online. Sometimes it's the worst kind of gossip attributing disgusting and malicious acts to people who would surely be in prison if such things were true. Sometimes it's people offering to be my secret occult advisor or who claim special knowledge because they own Gerald Gardner's old chamber pot. Those are messages I can generally safely ignore. Sometimes, though, people have a weird idea in their heads, and it's an idea I hear repeated until I feel compelled to write … [Read more...]

The Devil Is A Useful Creature

Some days I envy the Christians their Devil. He's such a useful creature. All the evil deeds mankind does can be left on his doorstep. Everything we don't like can be blamed upon him. He's a one-size-fits-all scapegoat and I kinda wish I had one.If I had a Devil I'd blame him for my hair not cooperating and looking sad and limp. I could spend more time on my hair, but it sure would be easier to blame a Devil for the frizzies. And when someone cuts me off in traffic, instead of reminding … [Read more...]

Pagan Spotlight: Lamyka

I'm going to try to regularly shine a spotlight on Pagans doing cool things, and right now I want to shine a spotlight on Lamyka, founder of Proud Pagan Podcasters, creator of Lamyka's Wiccan Podcast, Pagan Bedtime Stories and Pagan Women's Podcast, as well as the owner of Haumea Botanicals.Lamyka is a native Hawa'iian and really busy lady. Besides creating a dynamic organization to trade tips and promote Pagan podcasts, Lamyka has been creating a series of bedtime stories and coloring books … [Read more...]

Why Initiation Made Me Love Solitary Wicca

Some of the shock and bewilderment have passed, I'm eating solid foods and life is sort-of back to normal. Some folks wanted me to unpack my experience a bit, and I've had some interesting insights that I can share, so here goes:Even if my initiation wasn't oathbound, I still really couldn't tell you about it. Some human experiences can't be effectively communicated. I'd imagine giving birth or losing a loved one to a wasting disease are good examples of those kinds of experiences. You can … [Read more...]

Why I Love Wicca

I am a Wiccan. Wicca is a form of religious Witchcraft, and I love it dearly. I didn't always love it. For a few years I desperately tried to find another Pagan path that spoke to me. Yet I came back to Wicca, though at the time I was not enamoured of it's history and skeptical of it's theology. I was an eclectic solitary Wiccan, now a traditional Craft student, and soon to be an initiate of a Wiccan tradition.Consider the Rede: An it harm none, do what ye will. It's like a little flower, a … [Read more...]

Don’t Worry, Wicca Isn’t A Real Religion (A Rant)

I have to give Andrew Bowen credit for being well-meaning. I do think he means well, but Project Conversion just makes me a little nauseous. Maybe I should feel better knowing he's given the same shallow treatment to other faiths before he hopped onto mine, but I don't. I think it's just as insulting to try to be a Jew for a month.I think we need a Pagan version of Godwin's Law, perhaps I shall dub it Foster's Law: when any person attempts to give a shallow overview of any Pagan tradition they … [Read more...]

The Passing of Lord Merlin

Lord Merlin, aka David John White, was the elder high priest of the Ravenwood tradition for almost three decades and he died over a week ago, on Mabon. He led an extraordinary life, much like his wife Lady Sintana, and he died a year and a week after she passed from us. He was there by the Lady to bless the founding of my coven, and when I'm initiated this Saturday he will be a part of my lineage, my spiritual grandfather. Though I never met him, his passing fills me with sadness, and more than … [Read more...]
