In a Former Life, This Was My Living – Satellite Soul: Always the Same

YouTube Preview ImageIt’s seems like forever ago that that very nearly every waking moment, for me, was consumed with music, songwriting, producing records, and touring. So many hours, so much of my heart and soul were invested in these songs, and it all feels so fleeting now. About a decade, somewhere upwards of a thousand shows, and I still can’t remember the lyrics to my own tunes.

I can’t always say this, but I’m really glad that I wrote Always the Same. It seems as though this song came from a genuine place for me, and I love the lyrics. When we were in the studio Paul (our producer, Paul Ebersold), kept trying to get me to speed up the tempo. We’d bump it up 2-3 beats per minute, play it once, bitch and moan, and lower the beats per minute back down. We’d continue rehearsing for awhile, then ask Paul what he thought. “Faster,” he would say. We’d bump it up 2-3 bpm, play the song, bitch and moan, and repeat the process… took nearly all morning. Finally I realized that this song beats to the tempo of my life. …nothing I could do about that, so this is where we ended up. To this day I don’t think I’ve ever rushed this song, (which is really saying something for me). I also don’t think I’ve ever sung it with my eyes open.

So, because everybody needs a little Satellite Soul in your life:

Always the Same
words & music by Tim Suttle

The leaves they now have fallen
They float upon the breeze
Here to give a wink and say goodbye
And the spring has stopped its calling
The summer said its peace
And I am left to watch creation die
And I’m breathing out and breathing in
Again

And everything around me, it is passing away
Dust to dust ’til nothing will remain
Here we are and You are always the same

All the treasures I have guarded
With bars around my heart
That held me for the ransom of control
‘Til the Maker struck a bargain
That tore the veil apart
And sewed it to the fabric of my soul
And I’m here to live and here to die
So I’ll try

And everything around me, it is passing away
Dust to dust ’til nothing will remain
Here we are and You are always the same

And here You do surround me in an interesting way
With beauty that has never seen its match
It is fading, it is so dimly seen
It’s a picture of You that will someday expire
With a word of Your mouth and a glorious fire

And everything around me, it is passing away
Dust to dust ’til nothing will remain
Here we are and You are always the same
