Ramadhan 2016 – Day 19 (Ta Ha)

Ramadhan 2016 – Day 19 (Ta Ha) June 24, 2016

quran day 19

Chapter 20 (Taha) is the first chapter whose sole emphasis is on musa. While Ch 7 does give emphasis to him, Ch 20 does not contain any other narratives and also narrates his story almost from beginning to end.

This chapter starts with Quran and its utilization. It tells us that any reading of Quran should not cause rifts (shaqiya), it should give a reminder and should be reflective of Allah’s names. Why is Quran mentioned here? Because musa as a personality is deeply connected with Quran as a phenomenon. In other words, if one wants to understand the essential, practical use of Quran, then the story of musa is the resource.

The story of musa begins early on in Vs 9. It starts with musa’s discovery of Allah and the undertaking of his struggle. It then double backs to musa’s origin and the struggle of his mother and sister (showing the yin/yang dynamic of musa). Then it goes to his struggle and eventual victory against firaun. This  chapter actually ends with the eventual failure of bani israil to keep their covenant. There is also the final call to bani israil here (20/80)

After the story of musa,  Ch 20 goes back to Quran itself and its utilization (20/112-114). Here, the performance of righteous deeds are mentioned alongside the Quran and the manifestation of Allah. Another interesting inclusion is the story of adam from Vs 115, showing the end goal of the musa project. This chapter ends with practical instructions.
