Cress, Wi-fi and Radiation…Oh My!

Five girls in 9th grade rock an experiment! And all because they couldn’t stay awake.

Six trays of seeds were put into a room without radiation, and six trays were put into another room next to two [Wi-Fi] routers. Such routers broadcast the same type of radiation as an ordinary mobile. Then it was just necessary to wait 12 days, observe, measure, weigh and take pictures along the way. And the result spoke was clear…

Exposure to high levels of electromagnetic radiation has long been know to be unhealthy. And there have been numerous concerns expressed about the radiation from cell phones.

The Danish girls were motivated by their concern regarding the common teen practice of sleeping with a cell phone underneath their pillow. There is too little reported to fully assess their experiment, so perhaps we shouldn’t make too much of the results. However, the girls have presented a novel approach for future experiments. hope that the attention they are receiving will prompt researchers who replicate the study to investigate such variables as distance from the radiation source, the effect of barriers in absorbing or reflecting such radiation, and the quantity of radiation being emitted e.g. a wireless router is likely to put out far more radiation than a cell phone.

Yeah, I didn’t see much control for confounders like room temperature / humidity, blinding the experimenters and observers, or even controlling for EM fields other than their experimental source. And I still haven’t seen a good explanation for what mechanism of action cell phone radiation is supposed to cause harm by.
