The Right Reverend Charles Wamika, Bishop of the Diocese of Jinja, praised the Ugandan Parliament for the Anti-Homosexuality Act that provides life in prison for LGBT people.
The anti-gay legislation represents an ongoing, de facto genocide of the LGBT community in Uganda.
Without compassion, and with a malignancy only religious superstition can sustain, Bishop Wamika encouraged parents to turn over their gay and lesbian children to government authorities for re-education and imprisonment.
In a chilling and disturbing Easter address, Bishop Wamika told parents of gay and lesbian children that they would be rewarded in heaven if they turned over their gay and lesbian children to the state for punishment.
The Bishop went on to call for a blessing for Uganda’s Christians who worked so hard to “free the land of gays.”
Of course, if is not only Ugandan Christians who are responsible for the onslaught of genocidal fury faced by Uganda’s LGBT community. The irrational and mean-spirited homophobia of Wamika and other Ugandans can be directly traced back to the influence of Christian missionaries from the west infecting generations of Ugandans with the most obnoxious and despicable religious bigotry, hatred and misinformation.
Indeed, many conservative Christians in the west quietly praise the brutal and inhumane treatment of LGBT people in Uganda. And while not all Christians praise the despicable and barbaric actions of the Ugandan Christian community, too many remain silent. And in that silence there is consent, and there is guilt.
Indeed, one must ask: where are the decent Christians? Are there any decent Christians? Will Pope Francis denounce a Catholic Bishop who praises torture and life in prison for gays and lesbians? Will any notable religious leader denounce the gross atrocities being committed by Ugandan Christians in Christ’s name?
The world waits, and the unfortunate suffer.
