But those pro-choice Thin Mints are delicious! Silly conservative Christians are once again boycotting Girl Scout cookies, claiming the beloved organization is in reality a nefarious group promoting abortion and lesbianism to little girls.
Yes, it is that time of year again when Girl Scouts are out in force selling their delicious cookies, and this year conservative Christians are offering dire warnings about the cookies in an action dubbed CookieCott 2015.
Ann Saladin is one of those silly conservative Christians who wants to take away your delicious Girl Scout cookies. A former Girl Scout herself, Saladin is now the founder of My Girl Scout Council, and is one of the Christian conservatives leading this year’s boycott against Girl Scout cookies.
The Girl Scout curriculum series promotes many women and organizations that publicly advocate for abortion rights, without a similar inclusion of women and organizations that publicly advocate against abortion. Girl Scouts claims to build girls of courage, confidence and character. Surely this can be done without including such a controversial issue, and promoting women and organizations who advocate for abortion rights to the girls.
Saladin is not the only conservative Christian claiming the Girl Scouts promote abortion. Right Wing Watch documents how conservative Christians commonly cite the discredited myth that the group is funding Planned Parenthood, and is pro-abortion.
Right Wing Watch reports:
Fox News pundit Todd Starnes has also called on his fans to boycott the cookie drives, saying last year that cookie-buyers should seek out more “wholesome alternatives” since “Girl Scout money was helping to fund Planned Parenthood.” American Family Association president Tim Wildmon also called for a cookie boycott last year, saying that “buying Girl Scout cookies serves only to further facilitate a very liberal pro-abortion agenda.
In addition, the Family Research Council (FRC), an anti-gay Christian hate group, previously claimed that the “radicals” leading the Girl Scouts seek to “promote abortion” and “push for same-sex marriage,” alleging that Scout leaders believe that “abortion and sex-ed and promiscuity for very young girls is a good thing.”
FRC president Tony Perkins warned in 2012 that the people behind the Scouts’ “liberal indoctrination” efforts are “not having kids so they want to make sure they can get our kids.” He said that by encouraging “promiscuity,” future Scouts will need to go to Planned Parenthood clinics:
[I]t makes sense for Planned Parenthood to want to be teamed up with the Girl Scouts because that’s a client base for them if they can get this information into their hands to encourage promiscuity and behavior that would lead them into Planned Parenthood clinics.
But the crazy does not end there. The earnest and concerned religious right pundit Kevin Swanson once begged his listeners not to buy the cookies, claiming the Girl Scouts are a “wicked” organization that is turning young girls into lesbian communists.
Making a dramatic plea in 2013, Swanson said on his “Generations Radio” program:
I don’t want to support lesbianism, I don’t want to support Planned Parenthood and I don’t want to support abortion, and if that be the case I’m not buying Girl Scout cookies.
Please, I beg of you, do not buy Girl Scout cookies. Please, I beg of you, stop buying Girl Scout cookies. And if you do, take a big black magic marker and cross out all of the references to Girl Scouts of America on all of the signs and all of the boxes because we do not want to promote that organization.
In reality, the Girl Scouts are a fantastic organization that rejects discrimination and accepts lesbian and bisexual members because it’s the right thing to do.
The Girl Scouts are 2.8 million strong with 2 million girls and 800,000 adults who believe girls can change the world.
Helping girls discover their strengths, passions, and talents, the Girl Scout mission is one of building girls of courage, confidence, and character: girls who make the world a better place.
The preeminent leadership development organization for girls with programs from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to do something amazing. To volunteer, reconnect, donate, or join, visit www.girlscouts.org.
And buy some of those delicious cookies.
