Trump’s Attorney General Pick is a Moral Monster

Trump’s Attorney General Pick is a Moral Monster November 18, 2016

Senator Jeff Sessions is a racist, anti-gay, anti-women, moral monster.

President-elect Donald Trump’s planned nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) as attorney general is being condemned by almost everyone.

The top Trump surrogate and Alabama senator is a truly deplorable individual.

Race

Sen. Sessions is a confirmed white nationalist with a long history of racism.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) condemned Trump’s planned nomination of Sessions. Registering their complaint, the group tweeted the following Friday morning:

Sen. Sessions as AG is deeply troubling, and supports an old, ugly history where Civil Rights were not regarded as core American values.

The NAACP routinely gives Sessions an “F” on its congressional scorecard.

ThinkProgress reports Sessions has referred to the 1965 Voting Rights Act as a “piece of intrusive legislation” and reportedly suggested that a white lawyer might be a “disgrace to his race” because he represented black clients.

Sessions was a federal prosecutor in 1986 when he became only the second nominee in 50 years to be denied confirmation as a federal judge. This came after allegations that he had made racist remarks, including testimony that he had called an African-American prosecutor “boy.”

Indeed, Sessions has a long history of opposing civil rights for people of color, and has been accused of using racially insensitive language in the workplace.

In fact, Sessions once said he thought the KKK was “Okay,” until he learned that some of them smoked pot.

LGBT

As for gay rights, Sessions believes that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, and has routinely criticized the U.S. Supreme Court and activist lower courts when they try to judicially redefine marriage.

Sessions opposed the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and voted for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Reason reports:

In an appearance on Morning Joe in 2009, Sessions sympathized with those who “might feel uneasy” about the prospect of a gay Supreme Court justice, which he described as “big concern.”

Unsurprisingly, he also called the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling legalizing gay marriage across the country “unconstitutional” (he had previously voted in favor of a ban on gay marriage to be enshrined in the Constitution), and was one of 31 Senators on the losing side of the 2010 Senate vote to end the ban on gays in the military.

Women

NARAL reports Sessions has a long anti-choice record. In the Senate, he repeatedly voted to allow violent, convicted anti-abortion offenders to escape their court-levied fines in bankruptcy, voted against a resolution in support of Roe v. Wade, and voted for the unconstitutional 20-week abortion ban. He has also voted against protections against clinic violence, as well as to defund Planned Parenthood.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement in response to reports that Senator Jeff Sessions will be the next Attorney General:

The last person women and families need in this job is someone who has repeatedly given a pass to individuals who commit acts of violence against abortion clinics, doesn’t take sexual assault seriously, and was determined to be too racist by a GOP-led Senate to become a federal judge. But that’s who Jeff Sessions is. His record of misogyny and racism makes him unfit to be the country’s top lawyer. The American people deserve far better, but with Donald Trump at the helm, we know we won’t get it.

More recently, Sessions defended Trump’s indefensible admission that he engages in sexual assault. When Trump was caught on tape saying that he could grab a non-consenting woman by the genitals, Sessions claimed that it was not sexual assault.

Bottom line: Sessions is a moral monster, and unfit to be Attorney General.
