We noted last week that President Obama was expected to move forward with unilateral action on gun control.

Today we’re seeing new reports confirming his movement.

President Obama is meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Monday “to discuss options for tougher gun restrictions and is expected to announce in the coming days a new executive action with the goal of expanding background checks on gun sales.”

Moreover, CNN’s Anderson Cooper will sit down with President Obama on Thursday for a live town hall event on guns.

CNN details that

Plans for the action are not yet complete, and those familiar with the process warn that unforeseen circumstances could delay an announcement. But gun control advocates are expecting the new actions to be revealed next week, ahead of Obama’s annual State of the Union address, set for January 12.

Gun control advocates and White House officials say the focus remains on the so-called “gun show loophole,” which allows certain sellers of guns — at gun shows and elsewhere — to avoid conducting background checks before making sales.

We’ll be anxiously waiting for an update on any action taken concerning gun control and the effort to reduce gun violence.

As we said last week,

On the other hand, the GOP recently rejected a proposal that would “bar individuals on terror watch lists from purchasing firearms.”

Guns aren’t the problem, but the people with mental disorders wielding these weapons are the problem, we’ve heard.

So, did the GOP work with the Democrats to increase funding for services treating mental disorders and substance abuse? Nope, the amendment “meant to improve funding for services treating mental illness and substance abuse disorders failed in a 47-52 vote.”

And what have the US Bishops asked congress?

We ask you to support policies that:

  • Require effective and enforceable universal background checks for all gun purchases; and,
  • Establish a vigorous law that makes gun-trafficking a federal crime. In addition… support provisions that:
    • Limit civilian access to high-capacity ammunition magazines;
    • Ban assault weapons.

And they’ve stated:

We support measures that control the sale and use of firearms and make them safer (especially efforts that prevent their unsupervised use by children or anyone other than the owner), and we reiterate our call for sensible regulation of handguns.

But not just that…

However, we believe that in the long run and with few exceptions (i.e., police officers, military use), handguns should be eliminated from our society. “Furthermore, the widespread use of handguns and automatic weapons in connection with drug commerce reinforces our repeated ‘call for effective and courageous action to control handguns, leading to their eventual elimination from our society.’” [Tweet this]

While some focus on gun control to reduce gun violence, others point to the breakdown of the family, and still others blamed atheism, we suggested looking at capitalism some time ago.

As we wait and consider the above, I’ll part by hoping you have a blessed feast of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, patron against the death of children.

Until next time,
