Why Does True Love Have to Wait?

Why does the Church teach that sex belongs in marriage?

This video is a bit long, but well worth watching.

The Duggars are currently teaching America why true love waits- with the courtship of their two oldest daughters. Makes me with my catechesis had been better on this subject back in the 1980s.

Aren’t the Duggars the couple that have 19 children?

Yes. I haven’t followed the courtship episodes, but I can agree with Mr. Seeber. I wish I had been given more guidelines for dating/courtship (or any, for that matter). Learning by watching other kids and reading romance novels just doesn’t cut it.

Yes. And they’re teaching their daughters courtship, not dating (saving first kiss for wedding day).

I read somewhere about how they support themselves. They were doing it without the TV money for quite some time and managed without any government assistance or going into debt. I know they owned a gas station at one point. I admire them because they seem to be a close-knit, loving family, and it is nice to see a large family that isn’t all chaos. (My preferences in “reality” TV run toward Face Off and Project Runway, so I haven’t seen The Duggars for a long time or Jon & Kate Plus 8 at all. I imagine that having 6 children at once, with the extra care needed for premature babies, would be a strain even without the TV cameras. Eight children coming along one at a time would be easier.)
I also think that no kissing while courting is too extreme of a limit. Obviously, within the Christian faith, there are things which are totally off limits, but that doesn’t mean no physical affection at all, unless the couple really feels like they can’t stop at any point once they start kissing. Maybe, in those cultures that encourage marrying young, the extra cautions are more necessary?

“Perhaps they will have a couple of kids who think for themselves, and make up their own minds.” — Ahh, the old “make up their own minds” ploy. Perhaps parents ought to simply let their kids decide whether or not theft and murder are wrong. After all, we don’t want to interfere with their ability to make their own choices…

“Personally, why would any woman want to give birth to 19 children?” — Perhaps because she respects God and His plan rather than her own comfort?

They own rental properties and several businesses.

Thanks, Rob B. for that information. I figured they must have some decent form of income—besides the show, which I would think would end at some point.

I read he had 7 rental properties and rents a cell tower. That income may have been fine in the beginning when they were a smaller family, but not 19 kids even at $1k rent. You also have to count insurance( I hope), property taxes, and periods of vacancy. They got help from their church too.
