House Panel OKs Bill to Stop Unlimited Abortions in Nations Capital | LifeNews.com

House Panel OKs Bill to Stop Unlimited Abortions in Nations Capital | LifeNews.com.

The House Judiciary Committee of the United States House of Representatives passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, HR 3803 on a 14-18 vote today. It sound as if it came out of committee without amendments.

I was mistaken about the scope of this bill. It evidently only applies to abortions in the District of Columbia. Apologies.

I have not been able to find a record of how the various members voted on HR 3803. As soon as I do, I will let you know.

What you might do for now is email the same Congresspeople you emailed earlier and ask them how they voted. It’s important to follow through with them, to let them know that you are watching.

The Judiciary Committee of the United States House of Representatives is scheduled to vote Wednesday on HR 3803, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

The bill prohibits abortion after 22 weeks gestation. It is based on scientific evidence that an unborn baby can feel pain at this age. A bill similar to this that passed in Nebraska forced late-term abortionist Dr LeRoy Carhart to move most of his abortion business to Maryland.

Please email members of the House Judiciary Committee. You can find links to these members at http://judiciary.house.gov/about/members.html

Tell them that you are pro life and you want them to vote for this bill in every instance, including all procedural votes. Ask them to respond to your email by letting you know how they vote.

If you live in their district, be sure to mention it. If you have put their yard sign in your yard, donated to their campaign, or voted for them, mention that. If you are an activist in your state’s political party, mention that, especially if it is the same party as the Congressperson.

Don’t be unkind or hateful, even if you know they will disagree with you, but also don’t be shy. They work for you.

Foot of the Cross

Mary and Jesus

Peter Wiebe’s blog, Threshold of Heaven, takes readers to the foot of the cross.

Peter lost his precious little boy, Jesse, to cancer a year ago. Threshold of Heaven is a tribute to Jesse and a searingly honest account of the hardest grief any person can know; the loss of a child.

Peter’s posts make me think of Our Lady. She had to watch her child die, too. St Simeon told her when Jesus was only a few days old, “A sword shall pierce your soul.” And it did.

Yet, the Archangel Gabriel called Mary blessed.

This isn’t an award. It’s an acknowledgement of a beautiful, brave little boy and his loving and brave Dad.

Thank you Peter, for your generosity in sharing your love for Jesse with us.

This is unconventional, but I want to re-blog a re-blog of one of my posts here on Public Catholic. Our friend Art really hit the ball out of the park with his comments. I think we all can benefit from reading them. Thank you Art for adding your valuable experience and wisdom to this discussion!

The series on politics as I know it is full of hard truths. Given the state of our Union, it HAS to be a downer, or it wouldn’t be honest.

I hate dumping all the negativity on you.

I saw this and thought I’d share something a bit more uplifting. We are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made!

This is the Beginning, Not the End of the Legal Challenges to the HHS Mandate

I have had the honor of working with the woman quoted in this article, Dorinda Bordlee, on pro life legislation in the past. She is a woman after my own heart. Her comments about today’s Supreme Court Ruling upholding the insurance mandate portion of the Affordable Health Care Act are, in my opinion, spot on. We have just begun to fight the HHS Mandate which forces churches, religious institutions and individuals to violate their long-held moral teachings.

This article contains links to the ruling itself and the BDF amicus brief which describes how the mandate imposes an “abortion premium.” I’m posting it here in response to the bishops’ request that we use this Fortnight for Freedom to study the mandate.

Obamacare Ruling Effectively Imposes a Tax on Pro-Life ConscienceJune 28, 2012. Washington, D.C. Today, the U.S. Supreme Court majority upheld the Obamacare law in its entirety under the unexpected reasoning that the “penalty” imposed on citizens who do not buy approved insurance is a “tax”, and thus legitimate under Congress’ tax and spend power. The dissent characterized the majority’s ruling as illegitimate “judicial tax-writing.”Bioethics Defense Fund President Nikolas T. Nikas said, “Because Obamacare contains conscience violating mandates, this decision effectively imposes a tax on pro-life conscience.”Dorinda Bordlee, BDF senior counsel, said, “It is important to note that this decision on the individual mandate does not address the pending religious liberty challenges to the HHS mandate or the abortion premium mandate raised in Bioethics Defense Fund’s amicus brief filed with the high court.” Bordlee said that “This is the beginning, not the end, of the legal challenges to the pro-abortion Obamacare Act.”Bioethics Defense Fund lawyers are carefully analyzing the 193-page opinion, and will continue to expose and fight the religious liberty and pro-life conscience violations embodied in the Obabamcare Act.

Now, more than ever, your continued support is critical as we continue the fight to put law in the service of life.

Bishops Renew Plea To Congress And Administration To Repair Affordable Care Act

http://www.usccb.org/news/2012/12-119.cfm

As I said in a comment to a friend of mine, we are like Abraham Lincoln when he said “The war is forced on us.”

This mandate is a “choose this day whom you will serve” issue. Let every one of us answer, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Supreme Court grants victory to President Obama, upholding constitutionality of 2010 healthcare law

Supreme Court grants victory to President Obama, upholding constitutionality of 2010 healthcare law.

The Court has spoken. The HHS Mandate stands, at least so far. An enormous number of lawsuits against the Mandate are wending their way through the courts. For those of us who oppose this Mandate, the message is simple and clear: Game On!

Nobody Even Cares About What’s’is Name

Read the blogs. Look at the polls. Ask your neighbors.

People are planning to vote against President Obama.

Other people are planning to vote for President Obama.

Nobody (except maybe his family) appears to be voting either for or against What’s’is Name. You know who I’m talking about; that other guy — the billionaire I-was-one-of-the-most-aggressively-pro-abortion-governors-in-America-until-I-decided-I-wanted-to-run-for-president thingy person that folks who are voting against President Obama have to … ummm … sorta vote for.

It appears that the President is in this race pretty much alone. And he’s got himself in a tie. Somehow or other, this supposedly genius politician has maneuvered himself into a dead heat … with himself. What’s’is name focuses on teeny-tiny issues of gaffe attacks and unseemly arguments such as the I woulda killed him deader than you did debate. He dances and prances around the ring alone, shadow boxing with himself. Meanwhile, Obama pounds himself with a right, a left, a right … until … he’s got himself on the ropes.

I’ve seen a lot of stupid things in politics. But this bizarre dumb-off of a presidential election takes the cake.

Both our contenders seem focused on attacking one another. They’re spending a lot of money, attacking each other’s positions and opinions. The problem is, we the people know all this stuff already. We already know that Obama never met an abortion he didn’t like and Romney feels pretty much the same but has, pragmatic politician that he is, decided to pretend he doesn’t. We already know that Obama wants to bring religion under the government heel. We already know that Romney is the bought and sold creature of the big corporations.

We. Already. Know.

So. What’s an American to do? Go to the write-in ballot?

I am a duly elected legislator. There are a lot of people who think it’s part of my job description to line up with my party and support our turnip, no matter what. But I guess somebody forgot to put the poison in my kool-aid, because I won’t do it.

Frankly, I am disgusted with the choices that our two political parties keep giving us. Year after year, election after election, we have to choose between the guy who’s owned by the special interests who are going to stab the American people in the back, and the guy who’s owned by the special interests who are going to stab the American people in the back with a different knife.

From time to time, a reporter will ask me how I voted in this or that election. It’s usually about some hot button issue here in Oklahoma. I always tell them that I voted by secret ballot. I do this because when I go into a voting booth, my vote is the same as any other American’s, and like all Americans, I have the right to privacy with my votes. My other votes, the ones I cast as a representative, are very public, and they should be. But not when I vote in elections. When I do that, I’m a private citizen.

So, come November, I’m going to vote by secret ballot. There are a lot of questions further down the ballot, issues and races that aren’t presidential, where I want to vote. I have an opinion and I want to express that opinion at the polls.

But when it comes to the dead-heat of Obama vs Obama with a side order of What’s’is Name … um … well … I wish I didn’t have to vote for either one.

Pray, Study, Take Action for Religious Freedom

This is a link to the story in our local newspaper about yesterday’s Rally for Religious Freedom OKC. If you have time, take a moment and read the nutso comments of the Christian-revilers. Don’t let their invective make you unhappy or angry. Just take a moment and pray for their conversion. God loves them just as much as He does you or me. He will change them if they let Him.

Oklahoma Catholics, Protestants, Rally for Religious Freedom

Then, resolve to never let nasty-mouthed bullying cow you into silence when it comes to standing up for Jesus. I’m not suggesting that you start fights with the kind of people who verbally harass and attack Christians. In fact, I’m not even suggesting that you go online and argue with them.

There’s a lot to be said for avoiding arguments with people who are not in their right minds. These folks’ comments aren’t so much comments as factually inaccurate sloganeering and slandering. I imagine that if you stood directly in front of one of them while they were spewing this, you’d end up with a face full of the spit that’s coming out with their high-volume verbiage. My guess is that they are mindlessly repeating what they’ve heard and what they say when they’re with people who agree with them.

Since they’re speaking mindlessly, what’s the point in trying to argue with them? They’re not in their right minds. Or at least I hope they’re not. That would be sad.

The point here is that it’s a waste of effort and an exercise in misery to try to talk to anyone when they are behaving like this. So …. don’t.

Here are some suggestions of what you might do instead:

Say a prayer for them and resolve to do at least one thing to help your fellow Christians get their collective heads out of the sand and stand up for Jesus.

Rather than trying to reason with people who sling accusations and bumper-sticker-speak like a gatling gun, invite a couple of your friends from church out for lunch. Bring along some information and enlist them in the fight. Ask them to take two of their friends out of lunch and enlist them.

If you are gifted with words, write a letter to the editor. That will give you the opportunity to state your views intelligently. If your letter gets published, don’t be upset if these same commenters come at the letter with their tripe. Don’t let it bother you if they get personal and ugly. Just concern yourself with getting your message out there. In fact, you might take this as an opportunity to write another letter re-stating your views in a courteous manner. Make the point that you aren’t engaging in ad hominem attacks. You are defending the Lord of all life … Who loves these people who are attacking Him and wants them to come to Him in repentance.

Host a letter-writing party for your Christian friends. Ask everyone there to write all of their elected officials of both parties. Leave no one out, including local officials. Tell them about the HHS Mandate. Say you oppose it.  Ask them to do the same. It’s ok for people to bring their computers and send emails. It’s also ok to write the letters on notebook paper by hand. You are their constituent. It’s their job to listen to you. You don’t need to be eloquent. What matters is that you care enough to write.

I’m deliberately suggesting non-confrontational ways for people to take a stand for Christ. I know that most people haven’t had years of getting publicly attacked for their faith like I have. I know it’s scary at first. But I also know that there is no greater honor than to be called an ugly name for standing up for Jesus. Don’t back down and don’t run and hide when people attack you because of Him. If you do that, you are not only allowing the Christian-haters to take over the public debate, you are cheating yourself of the chance to suffer, in a small way, for Christ.

No matter who you are or what you do for a living, you can do these small things for Jesus.

Remember: Standing up for Jesus is your vocation. It is the vocation of every Christian.

So, pray for a renewal of religious freedom in America and around the world. Study the HHS Mandate so you can talk about it intelligently. And take action by talking about it with your friends and family.

Stand up for Jesus! Do it now and do it every day for the rest of your life!

Rally for Religious Freedom June 23 OKC

Pray for Religious Freedom in America

In my opinion, the HHS Mandate which would force religious institutions to violate their teachings or face crippling fines and sanctions represents one of the most serious challenges to America’s Constitutional Government since the Civil War.

This mandate is not a law. It is a government agency rule, established by vote of a small committee of private individuals who were not elected by or answerable to the American people. If allowed to stand, the mandate will establish the precedent that the government may coerce the ministries of whole denominations to violate their own moral teachings or be shut down by government fines and sanctions. This is a direct, deliberate violation of the freedom of religion which Americans have enjoyed for over 200 years. This mandate must not stand.

I feel it is our duty as Americans to oppose the HHS Mandate and to insist that our elected officials act to make certain that this violation of our basic liberties is turned back and that it never occurs again. My hope is that all freedom-loving Americans will join with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in their stand for one of the most important freedoms that Americans possess.

On this, the first day of the Fortnight for Freedom, The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has released the following Prayer for Religious Liberty. If you agree with it, please pray it today and every day of the Fortnight for Freedom.

O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ.

Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome—for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us—this great land will always be “one nation, under God,indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

China Provinces Force Christian Women to Have Late-Term Abortions | LifeNews.com

China Provinces Force Christian Women to Have Late-Term Abortions | LifeNews.com.

China’s policy of forced abortions has been an ongoing crime against humanity for decades.

It has continued while administrations from both political parties have sat in the White House, and majorities of both political parties have controlled Congress. Despite their pious campaign statements, neither party has done anything useful to address this problem.

Forced abortions have continued unabated while America has exported much of our industrial base to China, turning China into a massive economic power and destroying our own economy.

Forced abortion has contributed to the imbalance in China’s population, with young men outnumbering young women, since baby girls are more often murdered in this fashion than baby boys.

Now, it appears that China has added Christian persecution to its list of crimes by singling out Christian mothers for forced abortions.

Despite campaign rhetoric to the contrary, it is highly unlikely that our government will address this horror in a meaningful fashion, no matter who wins in November. Money and corporate interests have ruled our relations with China for decades and I would guess this is unlikely to change.

In the words of our fellow blogger at St Anne Center for Reproductive Health, St Gianna pray for us!
