America Have You Had Enough Mass Shootings?

He's said it before America, and he will say it again. He's asking you nicely America.

Had enough mass shootings to support better gun laws? President Obama sure has. "A visibly frustrated President Obama offered condolences to the victims of the mass shooting at an Oregon college on Thursday, but he added that "our thoughts and prayers are not enough," and voters should demand changes to the nation's gun laws." No America hasn't shown the will to take any meaningful actions to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. The reasonable pleas to reform the system lose every ti … [Read more...]

Should Abortion Be Legal?

Yes we are still debating this question as a country

People have been able to get safe, legal abortions in the U.S. for over 40 years now. Ever since, Roe Vs. Wade in 1973, abortion rights have been a political football, where our politicians play a game with the health and welfare of millions to score political points. This political season has been the worst in  memory with all of our Republican candidates bragging about how they have defunded or will defund Planned Parenthood if they are president. Many activists remember fighting this … [Read more...]

“In God We Trust” is Unconstitutional.

In God we Trust Texas Senate

Here in Texas Christians love the national motto, so much that back in 2007 they chiseled and defaced the stone in our Senate chamber with it.The reasoning according to our now Lt. Governor Dan Patrick goes like this:"There will be times when all of us sit at our desk, and we'll be able to look at the words, 'In God We Trust,' and maybe get us through those times," Patrick said. In those late-night, contentious sessions, members will be able to look up at those words, "and know that … [Read more...]

Is Christianity Cultural Appropriation?

He even has a mullet. does that sell you that Jesus -a figure with Semitic ancestry was appropriated?

Cultural appropriation comes up in the news every now and again, and seems to provoke strongly worded opinions.  Miley Cyrus doesn't appear to get it even after having had it patiently explained to her many times by people, who actually experience it.  A blog post I did 2 year sago about Katy Perry's Geisha performance of "Unconditionally" earned more than a few angry comments by people, who don't seem to get what cultural appropriation is. So how about another example to illustrate the point? T … [Read more...]

Tell us again why we can’t have good gun legislation

Perhaps there are good reasons that most  Americans should own guns, but I want stay on point here. And yes, I was raised in Texas so I am keenly aware that it would be next to impossible to disarm just this state alone. However, why is it even possible for a Right Wing terrorist group like the Oathkeepers to keep their guns? Especially after already having used guns in the Bundy Ranch standoff against their own lawful government officials? Not only that, they will continue to keep their guns … [Read more...]

Kim Davis: It’s not about you

Doing this for god's glory?

Kim Davis emerged triumphantly to "Eye of the Tiger", as if she went the distance, and now she is back on her feet after just 5 days in jail.  She insisted with tears in her eyes that:“I just want to give God the glory,” Davis said. “We serve a living God who knows exactly where each and everyone stands. Keep pressing, don’t let down because he is here. He is worthy.”An argument can be made that she isn't glorifying her god either, by denying marriage licenses to same sex couples at the … [Read more...]

Angels are everywhere

angels are everywhere

Here in Detroit waiting for a plane back to the triple digit heat in September of  Dallas TX. Where it is so hot that it's been said:“If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent out Texas and live in Hell”  Philip Henry SheridanHere in Detroit, several people have complained to me about the 84 degree heat here that maybe feels like 94. And I suppose that is impressive for Michigan, especially given the school I gave a presentation at didn't have Central Air. We air condition everything in Tex … [Read more...]

New Texas textbooks a bit light on historical facts

"During the 1600s, people from Europe migrated to North America, settling along the Atlantic Coast and inland. The great majority of the colonists were Christians familiar with both the Old and New Testament of the Christian Bible. They brought with them Judeo-Christian values and ideas derived from biblical law. These beliefs made an important contribution to the founding principles and documents of the United States. In the Old Testament, for example, Moses calls for the law to apply equally to all people, even kings, and sets forth rules for a fair trial. The biblical idea of a covenant, an ancient Jewish term meaning a special kind of agreement between people and God, influenced the formation of colonial governments and helped shape the thinking of the men who designed our constitutional structure."

Although many concerned citizens, including Aron and me, testified in protest to certain claims like the theocratic dictator Moses having influenced the American  system of government, Texas students will now learn that, and also about what an exceptional snowflake America is.  It could have been worse had people not stepped in to remind the Texas State Board of Education that American history is not all white, nor all 'Right', but even though they stopped some of the shenanigans some of it st … [Read more...]

CNN: Chattanooga Tennessee shooting today possible “Domestic Terrorism”

It is some progress that it is being correctly identified as domestic terrorism rather than a deranged gunman, although the situation is grim.  4 Marines and the shooter are dead. At least one of the official in the video of Mayor Andy Berke's press conference in the feed on the article, is saying it is being investigated as domestic terrorism.  Although in the same video the banner says "terrorism was ruled out", that could mean international terrorism and the banner writer is conflating i … [Read more...]

The Purple and Blue People of Texas

Someone in Scotland was asking me, "We have all heard that Texas is a Minority Majority state, and that it is going purple then why are you still having problems with theocratic legislation?" (Paraphrasing it was a while ago) First this: people in Scotland know many more details about our state's politics than we do about theirs. Just to give you an idea about how people in other countries watch Texas not just for the buffoonery, but also out of genuine concern for the people doomed to ignorance … [Read more...]
