Not ceding your platform to Alt-Right Ideology.

I said on my Facebook right before the election I don't unfriend over politics. At the time, I had unfriended 16 people half of whom were spammers for sunglasses or something. But after years on FB, blogging, and Youtube I am tired of the same sort of blowhard derailing conversations.Alt-Right messaging has become rampant on the internet In fact, in my community of there are many atheists that are a part of the larger Alt Right community. The Alt-Right community  has a good portion of … [Read more...]

Documenting the Exodus from black churches

When I went to DragonCon, I didn't care about all the comic book stuff or who played the voice for some video game I don't play or TV show I've never heard of. I know, since I stopped watching TV around Y2K, I've really fallen out of the loop as far as pop culture goes. I was at DragonCon for the SkepticTrak, a lecture hall dedicated to atheism, skepticism, critical thinking and so on. I enjoyed every presentation I saw there. One of them piqued my curiosity. Mandisa Thomas, President of Black … [Read more...]

The Meaning of Race

Is race a biological or social construct? The word “race” as it is applied to describing ancestral traits in humans is notoriously difficult to disambiguate. The word itself is polysemous, or has different but related senses depending on the context of the discussion. The word “man” is also a polyseme that is ambiguous to the point that its use can obscure meaning. Man can be used in the sense of the words humanity, males, or the human genus. In any discussion of race, the word can change s … [Read more...]

If you needed another reason to go to Reason Rally…

More than a few atheists (unfortunately), who are angry at Reason Rally for standing up for Reproductive Rights and LGBTQ equality, are refusing to go. I can't say I will miss the unwarranted hostility because there will be plenty from creationists like Ray Comfort. Aron posted a video commenting on the diversity of viewpoints despite what anti-feminists believe and triggered a bunch of angry anti-social justice  commenters. It's disheartening to see some of the comments t … [Read more...]

Why we don’t support media trolls

It's not like we don't see people reminding us in comments on videos asking Aron if he is going to respond to something a media troll said. Often fans of media trolls try to start off-topic comment battles on every one of Aron's videos even on innocuous topics that are not controversial in the atheist community, like science education. All because he made one video in support of feminism a couple of years ago, which was quote-mined by a media troll a year ago.As someone who writes the Living … [Read more...]

Fox: South Carolina Attack on Faith not Race

When are the major media outlets going to call Dylann Storm Roof a terrorist for killing and terrorizing nine Black people?Fox News is appropriating this terrorist hate crime against a historic Black community church as an "attack on faith" instead.“Extraordinarily, they called it a hate crime,” Fox News host Steve Doocy noted. “Some people look at it because it was a white guy apparently and a black church. But you made a great point just a moment ago about the hostility toward Chris … [Read more...]

Chapel Hill: No wonder others don’t get the Muslim and Ex-Muslim Community

Even in the atheist community that prides itself on intellectualism, we often speak for and even instead of Muslims and Ex-Muslims. We have a listening problem.  Sadaf Ali, who helped found Ex-Muslims of North America, nails it... … [Read more...]

Black Voices Matter

White allies may feel uneasy speaking with authority on the the spate of unjust decisions involving a mix of racist cops and unarmed black people. It is a difficult thing to do and hard to do well. One thing is for sure is that a black person can do a better job of speaking to the issue. It may be difficult to take everything on board, but this piece by Briana Urena-Ravelo outlines many good reasons even people who mean well get it wrong. Worse than that, some white writers may make things worse … [Read more...]

Texas: Not ready for a progressive woman Governor

During the election coverage and Republican acceptance speeches there was a real element of attributing the takeover of Congress to President Obama even though he wasn't on the ballot. There are already congressmen who pledge to prosecute him for abusing executive orders even though he issued less of these than George W. Bush. As a black president, he is a very easy scapegoat for Republicans to bash. In fact, a third of Louisiana Republicans, blame him for the government response to Katrina, … [Read more...]

Is Texas doomed to another theocratic governor?

"Texas has been red since dinosaurs roamed the state 6,000 years ago. At least that is what the Texas history books say." The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has been filming from Austin, TX. this week.  After, a clip of the stupid ass things that our elected officials do and say, Stewart made the humorous observation that Texas would vote for a drunk guy in a bar hitting on a lesbian.Texas is saying goodbye to Rick Perry, whose "austerity" measures included cutting 5 billion dollars from the … [Read more...]
