Dallas Mayor not on the Islamophobia Bandwagon

Making Dallasites proud of something

Texas isn't widely known for progressive policy makers, but there are a few. Texas isn't as Red in its urban centers like Dallas, as it appears from the outside. Look at Texas Governor Greg Abbott's fearful response to Texas accepting Syrian refugees. As was reported by Rick Cohen last Monday, Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, joined other Republican governors in declaring that Syrian refuges(sic) were not welcome to be resettled in that state. “As the governor of the state of Texas,” he said … [Read more...]

Congratulations to Louisiana on Regime Change!

Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye!

Just when you thought the chances for political change in the South were pretty bleak, relatively unknown State Representative  (D) John Bel  Edwards comes along and upsets the Republican applecart. It was quite a feat in a solidly Red State like Louisiana. His victory speech: "This election shows us that the people of Louisiana in a time of deep cynicism about our politics, and also about our future, that the people have chosen hope over scorn, over negativity," Edwards told a crowd of s … [Read more...]

Twitter says Bernie won

Normally whoever wins the debate is whoever you already agreed with before it began, but it seems that Twitter has an objective way of determining the winner of last night's Democratic debate. See the link here.It was an amusing thing to see. The funniest summary I saw on Twitter was "a corporate sell-out, an idealist, and three cardboard cut-outs walk into a bar..."  It did seem like Hillary vs Bernie in the midst of three stuffed suits. I understand those other three didn't get equal … [Read more...]

Texas Governor Calls Freedom from Religion Foundation “Misguided and Malicious”

In God we Trust Texas Senate

Of course Texas Governor and Christian Culture Warrior, Greg Abbott, has pledged his full support for the Childress Police Department's commandeering of state owned police vehicles for the motto "In God we Trust". "There can be no doubt that courts in Texas would uphold the constitutionality of the Childress Police Department's decision to place 'In God We Trust' on the department's patrol vehicles," Abbott said in the letter. "If the Childress Police Department chooses to continue this … [Read more...]

Should Abortion Be Legal?

Yes we are still debating this question as a country

People have been able to get safe, legal abortions in the U.S. for over 40 years now. Ever since, Roe Vs. Wade in 1973, abortion rights have been a political football, where our politicians play a game with the health and welfare of millions to score political points. This political season has been the worst in  memory with all of our Republican candidates bragging about how they have defunded or will defund Planned Parenthood if they are president. Many activists remember fighting this … [Read more...]

Both Parties are the Same! #1 FLPCB HHSC 15-03 , also known as Conscience Protection for Private Child-Placing Agencies

Voter turnout during the US midterm elections was pathetic. There was a definite lack of critical thinking and due diligence evidenced by opposing Republicans, Libertarians, and apathetic liberals in the "Freethought" movement, who repeated the soul sucking canards "Both Parties are the Same" and "It's a Broken System" during the mid term elections. Aron and I tried to encourage people to vote, but were met with an onslaught of sanctimonious people acting as if not voting was more … [Read more...]

By God! Legislators take a stand, so that Jesus won’t return and find gay marriage!

Newly elected Christian Right legislators gathered in the Texas Capitol Building's auditorium today, and vowed to defend marriage from LGBT couples. No mention of a lesbian couple that a judge allowed to marry, because of life threatening circumstances. You bet your bippy, they will put a stop to that though! … [Read more...]

Chapel Hill: No wonder others don’t get the Muslim and Ex-Muslim Community

Even in the atheist community that prides itself on intellectualism, we often speak for and even instead of Muslims and Ex-Muslims. We have a listening problem.  Sadaf Ali, who helped found Ex-Muslims of North America, nails it... … [Read more...]

Texas: Not ready for a progressive woman Governor

During the election coverage and Republican acceptance speeches there was a real element of attributing the takeover of Congress to President Obama even though he wasn't on the ballot. There are already congressmen who pledge to prosecute him for abusing executive orders even though he issued less of these than George W. Bush. As a black president, he is a very easy scapegoat for Republicans to bash. In fact, a third of Louisiana Republicans, blame him for the government response to Katrina, … [Read more...]

This so much this is why your vote matters!Fortunately, you don't have to give blood anymore. At least not in the U.S., just some of your time. Vote for those whose votes have been suppressed. The polls are open here until 7:00 PM. We completely understand what it feels like here in Texas not to be heard. Aron and me testify to the smug school board here in hopes that more than just them will hear us. They want to censor the struggle for civil rights, and instead glorify America's war … [Read more...]
