Social Justice for Reasonable People: Racial Justice Discussions

How can reasonable people discuss racial justice? Any secular group that focuses on people of color often gets ironic criticism for being exclusive. Though in my experience with American groups, I don't know of any secular group that disallows whites from joining. As a biracial Asian-American, I have always been there doing my small part to help increase understanding of race issues in the movement. I have participated in discussions like during the Secular Social Justice Conference where some … [Read more...]

The Hateful Voter

Although support for same-sex marriage has risen from 39 percent in 2001 to 55 percent in 2015, GOP candidates are still running their homophobic credentials to court evangelical voters. Republicans face an aging base at the polls that lags behind the country in same-sex marriage acceptance at 32 percent. Religious belief also plays a role in shaping the political landscape for GOP candidates. The top GOP presidential candidates beliefs on the matter reflect the majority of their … [Read more...]

Three reasons not to raise your child to fear any god

There are a great many Christians who use the Bible for parenting guidance. As a former Christian, I did when my children were very young. If there is one piece of good advice on parenting (though it isn't meant that way) in the Bible, it is this:11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 1 Corinthians 13:11New International Version (NIV)Thanks to Donald Trump, I now read that … [Read more...]

Possibly World’s Largest Gathering of Atheists in Foxholes

Although you can't officially salute them yet because they are trainees, you can unofficially salute the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers.  The group just hosted a meeting of a possible world record 270 Airmen recruits based in the San Antonio area. They discussed where atheists get their morals from, which every atheist knows is from the reality of living in society and empathy. The meetings are conducted by Rebekah McGraw, a Humanist Chaplain,Ben Mcgraw, a Humanist Lay l … [Read more...]

Making it through the GOP Debates

I really appreciate the people, who are going the distance on watching the GOP debates especially. It takes real determination to wade through all that. There is another one for the good people of New Hampshire tonight.   It's important for me and everyone, who feels the same to get as many people to watch them as possible. I live in Texas, and we haven't seceded yet, but we are the canaries in the coal mine for just how bad the GOP has gotten. Even here there are people, who don't get how bad … [Read more...]

Clinton: National Security Concerns

I have to agree with Bernie Sanders that I don't give a damn about her damn emails, or Benghazi conspiracies either. This won't be the type of post about some arcane conspiracy that an avid Alex Jones fan would obsess over.  Later, I will get to my concerns about Senator Bernie Sanders in the next post, so it won't be a Clinton bashing party either.Although I am a Sanders supporter, Clinton still has time to change my mind. I watch the presidential debates with questions in mind I'd like to … [Read more...]

Aron’s Travails in India

As many of Aron Ra's Facebook friends already know, he went to the hospital for pneumonia, after staying in Delhi, India. As his wife, I can tell you in the 8 years I have known him; he has never been seriously ill. He was admitted with a temperature of 41.2  Celsius; that is 106 Fahrenheit in the antiquated Customary system. This trip already had me worried because of a tourist advisory for terrorism and an earthquake there. Odds start to be less of a lightning strike of those happening … [Read more...]

Texas weather has gone all “Texas” down here

Yes, Texas weather has gone plumb haywire, or "Texas" in Norwegian slang.  On the East side of Dallas, where Aron Ra and I live, secular relief efforts are underway from an estimated 11 tornadoes that tore through Dallas county and neighboring counties to the North and East. Tornadoes in December are rare, and the one that struck Garland where we live was classified as an "F4" leveling some houses to their foundations. The DFW area death toll is estimated at 11 people, and 600 structures were … [Read more...]

Governor Abbott: FFRF Capitol Holiday Display “Mocks Religious Beliefs” and must go.

In a characteristic display of both irony and projection, Texas Governor Greg Abbott in a show of disrespect to the state's nonbelievers ordered the Freedom From Religion Foundation's holiday display removed from where it had been squirreled away on the basement floor for this reason:"The Constitution does not require Texas to allow displays in its Capitol that violate general standards of decency and intentionally disrespect the beliefs and values of many of our fellow Texans," Abbott … [Read more...]

Why we don’t support media trolls

It's not like we don't see people reminding us in comments on videos asking Aron if he is going to respond to something a media troll said. Often fans of media trolls try to start off-topic comment battles on every one of Aron's videos even on innocuous topics that are not controversial in the atheist community, like science education. All because he made one video in support of feminism a couple of years ago, which was quote-mined by a media troll a year ago.As someone who writes the Living … [Read more...]
