Documenting the Exodus from black churches

When I went to DragonCon, I didn't care about all the comic book stuff or who played the voice for some video game I don't play or TV show I've never heard of. I know, since I stopped watching TV around Y2K, I've really fallen out of the loop as far as pop culture goes. I was at DragonCon for the SkepticTrak, a lecture hall dedicated to atheism, skepticism, critical thinking and so on. I enjoyed every presentation I saw there. One of them piqued my curiosity. Mandisa Thomas, President of Black … [Read more...]

The TIES evolution education program

On the latest episode of the Ra-Men podcast, we interviewed Bertha Vazquez, Director if the TIES program (Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science), which is an educational program supported by the Richard Dawkins foundation, through which Bertha and other members of TIES give middle-school teachers the background they’ll need to teach evolution in an effective and engaging manner.Previously we had spoken to Richard Dawkins and Robyn Blumner about our own classroom supplement supplement s … [Read more...]

Brilliant satire of racial justice denialism by Youtuber Edward Current

Social Justice Warrior is often meant as a pejorative. The insult is applied by everyone from Rightwing crank sites like Breitbart to people who aren't as religious but share a few opinions with the Religious Right -the new Alt-Right. The Alt-Right centers nativism even over religion as an integral part of its identity.A trait that is shared by many Christian Republicans who chose immigrant and Muslim basher Donald Trump over the bona fide Evangelical Ted Cruz for president. They chose Tru … [Read more...]

Watch this space

Aron Ra has some exciting announcements and new developments that he will tell you about after he gets back from protesting Ken Ham's Ark Park next week. People, who appreciate his work on popularizing science and secular advocacy, will like that he wants to launch a new science-related video series larger than the scope of the Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism. When we get back from Kentucky; we'll announce what that is. Don't try to get us to spill the beans before that. … [Read more...]

House Democrats in Seventh Hour of Sit In over Gun Legislation

In the wake, of the largest mass shooting in American history in Orlando that caused the death of 49 LGBTQ Lantinx Americans, House Republicans staunchly refuse to even bring proposed gun legislation to a vote. In this election season, it is all too convenient to not have your name attached to a no vote on not doing anything about keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people yet again.House Democrats are in the 7th hour of a sit in on the House floor. They have had the microphone and … [Read more...]

If you needed another reason to go to Reason Rally…

More than a few atheists (unfortunately), who are angry at Reason Rally for standing up for Reproductive Rights and LGBTQ equality, are refusing to go. I can't say I will miss the unwarranted hostility because there will be plenty from creationists like Ray Comfort. Aron posted a video commenting on the diversity of viewpoints despite what anti-feminists believe and triggered a bunch of angry anti-social justice  commenters. It's disheartening to see some of the comments t … [Read more...]

Professor of Atheism?

So I just read in the New York Times that a wealthy atheist has donated a couple million dollars to the University of Miami -with the purpose of endowing the nation's first academic chair for the study of atheism, humanism and secular ethics. Now, as an atheist activist as well as an advocate of reason in education, I am of course excited about that. But I am also conflicted and confused. I mean, what would an atheist study study? There's science of course, natural history and cosmology, logic … [Read more...]

Social Justice for Reasonable People: Racial Justice Discussions

How can reasonable people discuss racial justice? Any secular group that focuses on people of color often gets ironic criticism for being exclusive. Though in my experience with American groups, I don't know of any secular group that disallows whites from joining. As a biracial Asian-American, I have always been there doing my small part to help increase understanding of race issues in the movement. I have participated in discussions like during the Secular Social Justice Conference where some … [Read more...]

The Hateful Voter

Although support for same-sex marriage has risen from 39 percent in 2001 to 55 percent in 2015, GOP candidates are still running their homophobic credentials to court evangelical voters. Republicans face an aging base at the polls that lags behind the country in same-sex marriage acceptance at 32 percent. Religious belief also plays a role in shaping the political landscape for GOP candidates. The top GOP presidential candidates beliefs on the matter reflect the majority of their … [Read more...]
