Documenting the Exodus from black churches

When I went to DragonCon, I didn't care about all the comic book stuff or who played the voice for some video game I don't play or TV show I've never heard of. I know, since I stopped watching TV around Y2K, I've really fallen out of the loop as far as pop culture goes. I was at DragonCon for the SkepticTrak, a lecture hall dedicated to atheism, skepticism, critical thinking and so on. I enjoyed every presentation I saw there. One of them piqued my curiosity. Mandisa Thomas, President of Black … [Read more...]

The TIES evolution education program

On the latest episode of the Ra-Men podcast, we interviewed Bertha Vazquez, Director if the TIES program (Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science), which is an educational program supported by the Richard Dawkins foundation, through which Bertha and other members of TIES give middle-school teachers the background they’ll need to teach evolution in an effective and engaging manner.Previously we had spoken to Richard Dawkins and Robyn Blumner about our own classroom supplement supplement s … [Read more...]

An Amazing blurb

James Randi has written an Amazing endorsement of my book! The seemingly unquenchable popularity of the so-called "paranormal" has long been a puzzle, both to me and to my good friend Aron Ra. However, Aron's much more important and more specific interest in preoccupation with woo-woo is bifold: religion & creationism -- to the study of which he has given much thought and concern. His book Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism brings to our stunned attention the farcical, juvenile, … [Read more...]

Brilliant satire of racial justice denialism by Youtuber Edward Current

Social Justice Warrior is often meant as a pejorative. The insult is applied by everyone from Rightwing crank sites like Breitbart to people who aren't as religious but share a few opinions with the Religious Right -the new Alt-Right. The Alt-Right centers nativism even over religion as an integral part of its identity.A trait that is shared by many Christian Republicans who chose immigrant and Muslim basher Donald Trump over the bona fide Evangelical Ted Cruz for president. They chose Tru … [Read more...]

Three reasons not to raise your child to fear any god

There are a great many Christians who use the Bible for parenting guidance. As a former Christian, I did when my children were very young. If there is one piece of good advice on parenting (though it isn't meant that way) in the Bible, it is this:11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 1 Corinthians 13:11New International Version (NIV)Thanks to Donald Trump, I now read that … [Read more...]

Four Blood Moon Tetrad nonsense

I went to the American Atheist National Convention in Salt Lake City Utah in April of 2014. It's funny because there was a ComiCon going on right across the street. A lot of them belonged with us -and visa versa. Patrick Stewart and William Shatner were both speaking there, but could just as well have spoken for us too. There were Christian protesters outside who couldn't decide who's parade they should rain on -as they kept crossing the street trying to protest both events. You know those … [Read more...]

A Short Response to Steven Novella’s “Bigfoot Skeptics, New Atheists, Politics and Religion”

Dr. Steven Novella of JREF has posted in response to PZ's post on skeptical consistency in defense of economic policies particularly libertarianism. The gist of Novella's main contention with PZ is...Perhaps I am misunderstanding what PZ is saying here, and if so please correct me, but this sounds an awful lot like a desire to purge the skeptical movement of those with a differing political outlook. I find it hard to see how this would be a good thing. There is … [Read more...]
