Look who dropped in

Something fell through the ceiling. It made quite a mess.Oh look who it is.You are adorable!I coaxed that opossum into a pet carrier and took her down to the park. I left the door open with a piece of turkey on the exit, and left it in a field by a creek with trees in three directions.I went home and had dinner. I came back an hour later, and she was still in there. I had to slowly dump her out again. She didn't even notice the turkey. Poor thing. She … [Read more...]

Creationism’s False Equivalence

This was my lecture to the Secular Student Alliance at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, 2015/11/24.Today I’m going to talk about creationism, also known as Intelligent Design or Creation Science –as compared and contrasted with actual science. The term creationists use to describe actual science is ‘evolutionary’ science, but they apply that to a lot more than just evolution. Because for them it’s more than just population genetics. In fact in their minds, it’s not population ge … [Read more...]

How we atheists do Thanksgiving

My friend, Vyckie Garrison posted a very sweet article on Raw Story about how atheists celebrate Thanksgiving. She asked several prominent atheists to participate, and I meant to. I don't know what happened. I thought I sent the message, but I'm not seeing it now. Pity. I really wanted to be a part of that. So let me just post it here.Obviously a lot of us know that we were lied to about Columbus and about the pilgrims and all of that. We certainly don't hold the Puritan's slaughter of the … [Read more...]

If you have ever used the term “Social Justice Warrior” as an earnest insult…

Because why would anyone have a problem with Social Justice?

The term "Social Justice Warrior" is often used as a pejorative by internet commenters to denigrate speech aimed at reducing gender, class, and racial inequality. To put this in perspective of the atheist microcosm of the larger community, atheists who criticize social justice advocates and who have large followings, often use this word liberally (meaning a lot, not politically liberal). For those who promote anti-social justice rhetoric with this term, have a look at what you may sound … [Read more...]

Counter culture conditioned

I'm having breakfast in a hotel that plays only Frank Sinatra. Every song, Sinatra. It's not that I hate Sinatra, but his whole genre. When I was a kid, the old fogies listened to "the rat pack", Sinatra, Sammy, Bing and Dino. Awful stuff. Amore' was a stupid fucking song! It was either easy-listening lounge lizards or worse. Whenever I stayed with my grandparents they played Lawrence Welk. That was agonizing -especially because I wasn't allowed to say anything about it. It was such stale … [Read more...]

Anti-theist Answers to Christian Questions

Matt Slick of the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministery (CARM) posted 31 questions for atheists, and I couldn't help but submit my answers to them.1. How would you define atheism?Atheism means ‘without theism’; theism being a belief system which proposes a deity. Atheism is a lack of belief in a deity; a deity being defined as a magical anthropomorphic immortal. A belief is a conviction. A lack of belief is a lack of conviction. So anyone who is not convinced that an actual dei … [Read more...]

Texas: Epic Fail on Climate Change Preparedness.

“Two hands working can do more than a thousand clasped in prayer.”

How in blazes can a state that weathers every single hurricane season get a D+ in flood preparedness? The rest of the climate change preparedness report card is equally abysmal: Texas received an overall "F" in planning to prepare for extreme weather in the report, "States at Risk: America's Preparedness Report Card." The Lone Star State received the "F" grade for being unprepared to deal with extreme heat, "D-" for its drought preparations, "D" for wildfires and "D+" for coastal … [Read more...]

So Bernie and Hillary both won that debate?

So the Huffington Post says that Bernie Sanders swept the polls as the clear winner of last night's debate. Click the link and see all their charts. They have several from Time magazine, the Washington Times, Slate, Syracuse.com, and even Fox, all showing that Bernie won by a landslide. CNBC said the same.So it's strange that the Wall Street Journal said that only 44% of Democrats thought that Bernie won. Each of these others favor Bernie by more than 80%. Those were all admittedly just … [Read more...]

Motorcops Toy Run

I'm sure almost everyone I know within a hundred miles of me will be at Skepticon this weekend, and I hope everyone has a great time there. It usually is every year. I won't be there because I'm staying home to work on other projects. But this Sunday, I will take a break and once again participate in something I've missed the last few years because I'm usually out of town. If you're into this sort of thing, the MotorCops for Kids toy run is (I think) the best biker event in this area all year. … [Read more...]
