Never Thirst Again

Never Thirst Again September 13, 2005

A few nights ago, I mowed my lawn in the hot summer sun. Before that, I picked up what seemed like an endless supply of sticks and branches. By the time I got inside, cleaned up and met a friend for supper, I was so thirsty. The poor waitress was so sweet the first few times she filled up my glass but I could see it start to wear on her on the fifth or sixth water fill-up. I’m sure she was thinking “how much can this guy drink?” I was so incredibly thirsty and I couldn’t help it. If she would have left the pitcher, I’m sure I would have been able to down it and ask for more.

Have you ever felt that way? Ice colder water just serves to completely refuel your energy and you’re able to face the day again. There’s a funny story of a friend of mine mowing the grass at a home for mentally challenged and one of the residents came out to ask “you want some water?” My friend said yeah and so the resident came back out with a little Dixie cup of water, about enough to get your lips wet.

I think it’s really cool that Christ used that parallel of life-giving water to describe what type of rejuvenation He can do in someone’s life:

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” – John 4:13-15

There are so many people wondering through this life, looking for that full, ice-cold glass of water to breathe new life into them. They try other thing after another but nothing gives them the satisfaction they’re looking for. They may even try some of Jesus – about a Dixie cup full, but there’s much more refreshment available. All they have to do is dive in head first.
