Monotheism Meeting?

I was just talking with someone currently doing research on John’s Christology and Jewish monotheism, and the thought occurred to me that it might be useful for a bunch of us who are interested in this subject to meet up for lunch one day at SBL.

Anyone interested? Any specific days that you’d prefer? If so, leave a comment and let’s see what we can organize!

  • Oh, I'd be very interested. I'm wide open regarding days, too (I think).

  • Jim

did you miss nathan macdonald's announcement on that very subject?http://earlyjewishmonotheisms.blogspot.com/2009/10/launch-at-sbl.html

  • No, you've clearly misunderstood. His announcement is about launch at SBL. Mine is about lunch at SBL. 🙂

  • I'd love to come. I too don't think I have any conflicts either.

  • I'd be interested. What day were you thinking of?Chris

  • Jim

yes but they are going to carry the meeting over after the alloted time to a place where they'll eat and chat more about the project. email nathan and he can tell you the when and where.

  • If you decide to have one, I'd love to come as well, at this point any lunch but Sunday would work for me .

  • Jim, I happened to have MacDonald's Deuteronomy and the Meaning of Monotheism in front of me when I read that. Thanks for the tip.

  • I've e-mailed Nathan to ask about lunch. But either way, it's clear that there is a monotheism project reception planned, and perhaps we should simply meet at that, and have a Christology 'huddle' in one corner. Here's what the Early Jewish Monotheisms site says about the reception:There will be a formal launch of the Early Jewish Monotheism(s) project at the annual meeting of the SBL in New Orleans. Friends of the University of Göttingen, Humboldtians and those interested in the research project are warmly invited to attend the reception at 9pm, November 23rd 2009 in Orleans/Rosalie/St Claude in the JW Marriott New Orleans.Anyway, please do let me know whether this event and a possible lunch connected with the session (which I think is on Tuesday) would be sufficient, or whether we also want to have a monotheism and Christology lunch as well. I'm planning on eating every day I'm in New Orleans, and am happy to have company to chat about interesting subjects!

  • JamesThanks for the email. I'll post an answer here, so that those tracing the comments on this post can get it too. We're holding the planning session for the SBL unit on Monday at 4pm and we're hoping to retire somewhere for dinner after that. The launch of the Göttingen project is at 9pm. There's no formal invite to the dinner. I'm hoping those who are interested can go en masse after the planning session and find somewhere suitable to eat and continue the conversation. I am happy for a Christology and monotheism group to 'crash'/'join'/'huddle in a corner and mutter' at that dinner.

  • Dinner on Monday plus potentially more huddling and muttering later that evening? Sounds perfect! What do others think? Is this enough? I'm still happy to meet up with people for lunch, whether informally or semi-formally.
