Misunderstandings

As often happens, a convergence around a common theme has occurred on blogs I read and on Facebook.

First, there was this headline, which I initially misunderstood, science fiction fan that I am:

Doctor Who Recommended Jesus to Patient to Fight Disciplinary Proceedings with Backing of Christian Legal Centre

Even having blogged about religion and Doctor Who, this still wasn’t a direction I expected the show to take. Did you understand it correctly the first time you read it?

Along similar lines, Peter Kirk explained that the headline “Kirk to Consider Gay Ordinations” had nothing to do either with his future in ministry or his sexual orientation.

And finally, A. K. M. Adam told me (on Facebook), “James, your status line in my FB news updates reads, ‘James McGrath recommends Obama Addresses Jewish Group, Just Days After Mideast Speech and Religion and Sex Quiz’ — which raises questions about how the Chief Executive is spending his time.”

"It's questionable since the one he chose to wake up was as beautiful as Jennifer ..."

Passengers
"It also has the best cameo spot in any of the original series episodes, with ..."

Doctor Who: City of Death
"Tom Baker is my favorite Doctor, Douglas Adams is my favorite script editor, and The ..."

Doctor Who: City of Death
"This is one of my favourite stories of the series, both because of Tom Baker's ..."

First thought for me after reading “Kirk to Consider Gay Ordinations”….CAPT Kirk must have been influenced by Sulu. He’s the only Kirk I know.

  • James, when I wrote “I will consider gay ordinations”, I did not mean that I might be ordained as a gay person (I am happily married to a woman!), but only that I might write a post on this subject!

Gary, let me introduce myself, and my blog. I’m Peter Kirk.

    • Peter, I hope you won’t take this post too seriously! 🙂

Peter, Nice to meet you. Small world. I checked your bio…”I started in life by studying Physics at the University of Cambridge”…I also started in physics, migrated to engineering (more jobs there), and finally retired after many years in the field. Although I didn’t do the things I thought I would when I was in high school (higher visions of maybe peace corps or vista – but ending up with lower visions of a steady job, good salary, and not-so-high ambitions). I spent my time working for the US defense department on, unfortunately, war related stuff. I respect your seeking another approach to life. Don’t think I would have the courage to follow your path.

I don’t think I would have noticed it in the original (with Who not capitalized), but with the capitalization, absolutely! (is now trying to imagine either some kind of glorious “Doctor goes back and meets Jesus” episode or fanfiction – the idea is great in theory, but would almost certainly be quite horrid in reality)

  • No, James, I’m not taking this seriously. I should have added a smiley.

Gary, nice to meet you too. I too started in a steady job in a defence-related company but was blessed to find a way out of it.
