Bibliographies in Separate Documents

If you are a student, and you have not explicitly been told otherwise, please don’t put your bibliography in a separate document. There is no reason for doing this. Sometimes publishers will ask for bibliographies of books to be submitted as a separate document because it makes formatting easier for them. But for assignments and essays, there is no reason for separating the bibliography from the rest of what you wrote, other than as a deliberate attempt to waste your professor’s time.

I just thought this should be out there on the internet somewhere, in case someone who is inclined to put their bibliography in a separate document has second thoughts and searches for a second opinion…

Just a random thought – have you come across Zotero, James? I’m not having to write academic texts with tons of citations these days, but even so I find it really useful.

I was wondering about its possible pedagogic use, rather than its utility for a professional scholar. Getting a class to collaborate in building ,sharing and annotating a master list of references for a topic, which has the advantage of allowing them to cite important works correctly when needed. Just a random interesting thought.
