Marvin Meyer R.I.P.

Marvin Meyer, known to many not only for his work on the Gnostic Gospels but also his appearance in several documentaries, has passed away. Alin Suciu has more details about his career and his passing.

Meyer was scheduled to present in the same Nag Hammadi and Gnosticism session as I am in November at the Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting in Chicago.  I was particularly looking forward to having the opportunity of that occasion to get to meet him personally, rather than just be someone who has read and appreciated his writings. I regret that now that shall never be.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Maybe you can chat in the afterlife

I’m genuinely saddened, as these teary eyes attest, I spoke with him a time or two on the phone. Marv, as we all called him, was a gentle and caring man. Take care my man, and we’ll debate “Judas” when we see each other later.

I was sad by Dr Meyer’s passing. He was my favorite professor in my years at Chapman. I know he will be missed.
