Port Cities in Israel

I love visiting port cities in Israel with students, because they illustrate in physical terms the connections that existed between this region and other civilizations around the Mediterranean. Yesterday we visited Old Joppa, which turns up not only in Jonah and Acts but also Clash of the Titans (the rock is still known today as Andromeda Rock). Today we visited Caesarea Maritimia, with its theater, hippodrome, and aqueduct built by Herod the Great.

    What of Ashdod-Yam and Ashkelon?

Also interesting sites. I had a friend who was on a dig at Ashkelon a couple of years ago, and thought about trying to pay a visit with students. But this route works well starting and the airport and making our way to sites in Galilee, the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea, Jerusalem, and eventually back to the airport.

Does this route pass through the Negev?

No, we don’t go that far south. We do a jeep excursion into the Judaean wilderness, though.

    Also, why the female over-representation?

Not sure, but it was the same two years ago.
