Lecture by Mark Smith, via Biblical Studies Online. See also William Hart Brown’s post on the same topic.
“…and that catfish must have been THIS BIG.”
I liked the part in the lecture when Dr. Smith talked about how the ancient Jews sometimes used feminine language to describe Yahweh – perhaps vindicating Dan Brown’s use of the “Divine Feminine in ‘The DaVinci Code’ ? (lol)”
I also thought about the contrast between (a) the powers of the sorcerers of Pharaoh when Moses battled them, suggesting the Egyptian sorcerers did in fact tap into the divine powers of the Egyptian Gods (just that this divine source was not as powerful as the divine source Moses tapped into), with (b) the much later battle between Elijah and the prophets of Baal where Baal’s prophets seemingly had no source of power to tap into (suggesting Baal did not exist to supply them with power to battle Elijah).
I can see why the guy got voted favorite teacher. Interesting, animated teacher with quite a resume. Two hours – haven’t had time to look at most yet.
But in the beginning – “YAHWEH one from Sinai”, but North West Saudi Arabia. Interesting that Moses spent 40 years there, as a Medianite. With a Medianite wife and kids. No wonder YAWEH choose Moses! Must have been nepotism.
