We here at R3 congratulate contributor Kimberly Peeler-Ringer on the launching of her website, The Churched Feminist. Read more about the site and the inspiration behind the launching below.

Over the course of my ministry with women, and in nearly every workshop, retreat or Bible study series I’ve ever led, there are always some ‘pulled to the side’ moments when a grateful participant will share with me that something I said was the first time she heard a certain biblical text interpreted that way. An example of this would be a workshop I gave on Mary Magdalene; I noted that there is no biblical evidence that supports the claim that she was a prostitute. In fact, the depiction of her as a prostitute appears to stem from a speech given in the year 591, when Pope Gregory the Great declared prostitution was one of the seven demons Jesus cast from her.

This is why I launched The Church FeministThe goal of this website is to bridge the gap between the church pew and the seminary classroom, and to provide some insight about meaning that privileges the perspective of womanhood in general and Black American womanhood in particular. My hope is that this website will create spaces for even more of those ‘pulled to the side’ moments to happen.
