Eighth Letter…A new TULIP for 2010

There's a national project underway that's inviting bloggers to write a letter to the church in North America. Many of these letters can be found here.  It's called the Eighth Letter and the link will explain why.  Here's my offering to the project... To the North American Church: I know you're struggling.  The symptoms of your problems are easy to see.  The obvious ones have to do with numerical decline and leadership scandals.  Less obvious, but just as problematic, is the explosion in … [Read more...]

Adaptive Leadership –

You might remember the book "Into Thin Air" from over a decade ago?  It catalogs some teams climbing Everest and attempting to summit on May 10, 1996, a day which became the deadliest day, in the deadliest year, of Everest mountaineering history.  One of the heroic stories of that day was the actions of Ed Viesturs and his climbing team, who were on the mountain to make an IMAX film.  Though they would summit later, their encounter of the storm created an entire reshuffling of their … [Read more...]

You’ve spoken regarding the mosque – my turn

On a drive north today I saw a sign, similar to this picture, that was intended (I think) to hearken us back to the 'good ol' days' of the Bush era.  It was a big billboard of the US Constitution, with the words, "Miss Me Yet?" plastered across it.  I know the political right likes to call all of us to the "intent of the framers" which means that the courts should make decisions by seeking to understand the mind of those who wrote the laws.  The Tea Party favors limited government because the … [Read more...]

If you build it, they will….?

So a mosque is planned near ground zero. What do I think? I'm glad you asked. My answer depends on who's asking. If a Muslim asked, I'd say, "Why are you planning on doing this near the site where America's greatest mainland catastrophe occurred at the hands of your religion's worst fanaticism? If you're trying to build bridges with the American people, this is an absurd strategy. It feels a bit, 'in your face', like running up the score when you're already winning. Bad form." If a … [Read more...]

Looking for “more” or “less”?

There's a rock and a hard place unfolding in the global economy.  The rock: We need to buy lots of stuff to keep the economic machinery going, so that there will be enough jobs, because when there are lots of jobs, people will buy stuff, which will create more jobs, blah blah blah.  The market's down about 240 (a big number if you follow it) as I write, because of worries people aren't going to buy stuff. The hard place: The most popular article in the NY Times this morning questions the … [Read more...]

How Cooking is Like Evangelism

When we packed for vacation, we didn't have a menu.  Instead we bought some stuff: string beans, apples, bluberries, spinach, mushrooms, onions, garlic, a little animal protein, some milk and cheese, some eggs.  We brought some stuff from home too: butter, olive oil, coffee, coconut oil, nuts. Now that we're here, it's just a matter of mixing things up the right way for the right moment.  This is last night's creation, which has no name, and will never be replicated.  It has some beef, lots … [Read more...]
