The Healer speaks through the stars…

If there's a time for everything, then there's a time for grenades of darkness to pummel our souls, battering the illusions we've built and exposing the raw pain of evil in this world.  Some weeks, some days, pastors are right in the thick of the battle, absorbing the explosion.  This has been a week of grenades: infidelity, abandonment, unspeakable pain, the idiocy of a pastor in Florida (whose church, in the height of irony, is named "Dove Outreach Center"), and smaller shrapnel as well, in … [Read more...]

Adaptive Leadership –

You might remember the book "Into Thin Air" from over a decade ago?  It catalogs some teams climbing Everest and attempting to summit on May 10, 1996, a day which became the deadliest day, in the deadliest year, of Everest mountaineering history.  One of the heroic stories of that day was the actions of Ed Viesturs and his climbing team, who were on the mountain to make an IMAX film.  Though they would summit later, their encounter of the storm created an entire reshuffling of their … [Read more...]

As if…a tiny anniversary meditation.

I don't know famous people, but this summer I was able to become friends with one of the actors on "The Middle" because his dad and I were in architecture school together.  We were all together at a conference where I spoke, and I learned about the challenges and opportunities that come to Christ followers who are professional actors.  He told me Patricia Heaton, who plays the mom in "The Middle" is a committed Christ follower.  So it was with great interest, two weekends ago, that I listened … [Read more...]

Soul Geyser…

Maybe you've been to Yellowstone and seen Old Faithful?  That's the one that gushes on schedule, the heat of the earth bursting out every 70 minutes or so.  Other geysers are less predictable.  We were walking past one in the frigid mountain air of November '95 when one busted up, baptizing my oldest daughter in sulfur.  You just never know when the depths will come pouring out. This past weekend was a soul geyser.  My sister, my only sibling, died in 1995, just a week before we moved to … [Read more...]

Surf’s Up…NOW!

"Let's go surfing" I said to my wife and daughter (more pics here), as we pondered what to do with the few hours we wouldn't be involved with family for my niece's wedding.  The girls were all "yes," and so after calling a friend from a summer conference at which I spoke, we found ourselves on the beach this past Friday morning with surf boards, under the tutelage of a man who grew up in the waves, and taught us with the patience of Job! I grew up in Central California, closer to mountains … [Read more...]

Showing up for each other…year after year

I just finished a week of ministry at Forest Home, a marvelous ministry in Southern California that shares Christ with thousands of families each year.  I love these weeks of itinerant teaching; , sharing meals, and talking about family life, church life, and ministry with people from all over Southern California and Arizona.  This is the kind of ministry that I did for years before settling in to life in Seattle as the pastor of Bethany Community Church. There was a group of people at family … [Read more...]
