So you atheists think you are smarter than Einstein?

I get comments…

Stella writes:

Do you guys think you are smarter than Einstein, who proved the existence of God mathematically? That Blair Scott is just seeking attention. He cannot be that smart otherwise he would watch his health instead of trying to dictate how others should think.

Well, maybe I am smarter than Einstein. Ever think of that, Stella? Watch this 30 second video and tell me that this is the same Einstein that you think so highly of that you commit the appeal to authority fallacy.

Maybe we could attempt the mathematical proof of god. Trinitarian mathematics: 1 + 1 + 1 = 1?

Or maybe we could see if Einstein was being misrepresented, misquoted, taken out of context, or even outright lied about.

It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it.Albert Einstein 1954

I mean think about it, Stella. If Einstein had mathematically proven god’s existence, wouldn’t people kind of remember him for that? As a former creationist, I used to quote-mine Einstein’s metaphorical use of the word ‘god’ to misrepresent Einstein’s position on faith. I wasn’t even aware that I was wrong about this, as I was simply repeating what others had said. But I have never heard of Einstein’s mathematical proof of god until now.

Why not? Because this myth originated years after I had already de-converted. It comes from one of those e-mail chain mailings that old people send to everybody they’ve ever met. This urban legend first appeared in 2004. The exact same story was also found circulating 5 years earlier, but without the freshly added Einstein angle. This is just a few plausible steps from believing that a ‘huge kesh out’ will come your way from a Nigerian Prince.

I think this is a discrepancy worthy of rational discussion.

albert einstein gives advice

Here are some more attempts to force the meme, click to embiggen. I’m even providing a blank Advice Einstein, just in case.

50 years of atheists I watched die  advice einstein plays dice

Let me know if you make your own Advice Einstein. Advice god is always in all caps, I think Einstein would be a little more classy. (Photoshop tip: use Impact font, white, with the text layer’s blending option 2px stroke black)

Ad Homenim attacks on Blair Scott aside, this was just an area of confusion easily cleared up. End of story, right? Not quite. A few minutes later, Stella was pissed that her comment didn’t show right away.

I know you will not publish this because Blair’s website does not allow comments…only HIS views are allowed and nobody can disagree…narcissistic for sure, other neurological problems? Only his doctor would know but he does not look healthy.

I replied to Stella’s ad hominem attacks in the comment thread.

I haven’t the foggiest idea who Blair Scott is, but already I have a great deal of sympathy for him. Obviously, Stella is projecting.

    • beerslayer

For what it’s worth, the above comment was made before re-reading the entry and response in question.

  • Justin Griffith

He’s the communications director at American Atheists. Really nice guy, military veteran.

Thanks, Justin. I’ll recognize his name from now on!

It still amazes me how civil you are when responding to incivil people like this “Stella”. I try to be a nice person when I can, but I know there’s no way I could have responded that calmly when someone I considered a friend has his character attacked like that.

Well, when you rip away nearly all of an e-bully’s anonymity they tend to learn how to be a human really fast. She is actually not skilled or careful enough with her privacy to be trolling like that. I say that because I really truly believe that most people (even drive-by trolls) are actually good most of the time. Unless she is walking down the street and calling little girls ugly and things like that, then I assume she had a momentary lapse of judgement.

I mean, seriously though – I hope she at least reads it and maybe not right away… but maybe someday in a year or two realize that she was wrong on so many fronts. I don’t think she’s going to track me down and apologize in a year, but maybe she wont spread the Einstein BS, and wont use personal attacks and insults to distinguish her Christian behavior from us.

Or, I wasted some time and got a bit of funny einstein photoshopping in. Whatever, either way.

I still don’t get where Stella gets the claim that Einstein proved the existence of god MATHEMATICALLY. If it were only that email that you mention, it has nothing to do with math. Where the hell would she find a mathematical proof of god? And really, if Einstein had been able to do that, everyone in the world would know about it. It’s also really strange that she just threw tht comment out there on that post. What does it have to do with that post, other than attacking Blair? I guess she could have made that comment on any post, because she was just attacking atheists altogether. Sigh…
