PBS coverage of Rock Beyond Belief

Check it out!Rachel Medley's soundbites were triumphant and prescient - despite some setbacks RBB faced at getting the Golden Knights to agree to jump. I'm comfortable with my own comments, as well. I've been the victim of unethical editing before, and I'm glad to say this is not one of those times. My favorite part of the report comes from Richard Dawkins' speech.Indeed. To all of the people who thought our festival was offensive, please redirect your anger to the people who … [Read more...]

PBS will air their coverage of the military atheist festival this weekend

PBS sent a team out to Fort Bragg to cover the festival and interview me. It's for their long running Religion and Ethics Newsweekly program. It seemed to go really well so keep an eye out.The show airs at different days and times in different markets (and is absent in a few). They've made it easy to find out when it's airing in your area on their website. My dad can watch from Dallas, where it's airing twice on Saturday morning (6:30 and 10:30). Hi, Dad! My mom can watch from Naples, … [Read more...]

The atheist Vietnam veteran’s reply

Yesterday, I posted about the Christian troll who said that atheists all die in foxholes - but god protects Christians from death.Bart Centre, author of The Atheist Camel replied:Good reply Justin. When I was in Nam I saw a lot of Christians die. One guy was so busy praying during an assault on our fire base he forgot to reload. Interestingly, this atheist 11Bravo made it home unscathed...except for heat exhaustion and worms. I guess no-god loves non-believers.-Bart CentreThat's … [Read more...]

Facebook super-fail: only Christians survive in a foxhole

Larry M. says I'm a 'dummy' that's going to get 'wacked' (sic) in a foxhole because... I'm not a Christian. He's also grateful that he doesn't have to be the guy who carries my body back to the FOB. Atheists are just too damned heavy! At least he accepts that there are indeed atheists in foxholes. I'm not sure why he sent me a message implying my impending death (because his god wouldn't block the bullets for me.) Oh well... this is progress, people! If you want to communicate with me … [Read more...]

Really, Fort Bragg…Salvation Army is okay, but not atheists?

When Fort Bragg denied our plan to collect canned food at the recent Rock Beyond Belief festival, the news went viral, and was even front-paged at reddit. If you haven't read it already, you really should take a look at that article. I broke down the regulations that their lawyers were 'creatively interpreting' in their pro-starvation policy. But look what just popped up in my email box. That's right...Fort Bragg says it's okay for the controversial and discriminatory Salvation … [Read more...]

Newt Gingrich was bitten by a penguin at the zoo

LOLWUT? Please tell me there is video of this!GREENSBORO, N.C. – The day after Newt Gingrich was bit by a penguin at a zoo, he acknowledged he is “the underdog” and said his campaign began renting their donor list because they needed money....Following a tour of the NASCAR museum, Gingrich said he spoke with Santorum in St. Louis, Mo. but only briefly. (This was the same day the Speaker visited the St. Louis Zoo, was nipped by a penguin and met a tiger named Callista – just like his wif … [Read more...]

The writing is on the wall at boot camp (literally)

A brand new foxhole atheist sent me a few pictures from his cell phone. He's in 'hell week' or 'reception week' of basic training. In a few days, his phone will be confiscated by his drill sergeants. He'll get it back when he's a soldier. This is Fort Jackson, SC. These posters are not government issued and are not supposed to be up. Since the command is either unaware or more likely - complicit - they've basically established another weird little 'Limited Public Forum'. All points of view … [Read more...]

Nightly ‘non-sectarian’ prayer aboard USS Abraham Lincoln in Hebrew?

I've been screaming that there is no such thing as 'non-sectarian' prayer for years. There is no universal method of prayer, and many religions don't even have such a thing. Still, the conventional wisdom in the military is that as long as you don't say "Jesus" it's somehow legal for them to pray at you (and force you to hear it and/or stand at attention for it). This came from a field grade officer in the US Navy, and it illustrates exactly this point.Sgt. Griffith,I’m currently d … [Read more...]
