Graham County IS NUMBER ONE!!! (hateful county in the state)

Some of us think we already look this stupid.

N.C.’s recently passed Amendment One is terrible. It prohibits gay and lesbian marriage, and functions as an amendment to the State’s constitution. We already had a damn law here prohibiting gay marriage, so it was a superfluous slap in the face to the LGBT community.

The vote was closer than many of us imagined – 61% For discrimination and 39% against discrimination. As you may imagine, the more rural counties voted ‘for’ it (for restricting marriage to heterosexuals.)

Statistically, one county has to be the most discriminatory. That ‘honor’ goes to Graham county – For: 2313, Against: 290 (88.86%)

Those 290 nice people in Graham county must live in fear.  BTW, that county is named after this Graham and not this one.

The Huffington Post had also an in-depth assessment worth reading.

    • President Clinton, considered by many to be the most popular political figure in the state, recording a robocall against Amendment 1, which began airing to hundreds of thousands of voters on Sunday, May 6.
    • There were significant indications that early voting went in our favor, including the fact that 23 percent of early voters were voting for the first time in their primary, indicating young voters (who were overwhelmingly against Amendment 1).
    • A record of ballots (approximately 508,000) were cast during the early voting period, which again was expected to be a boon against Amendment 1, though in reality it indicated higher turnout on both sides of the issue.
    • The Campaign to Protect All NC Families outspent Vote for Marriage NC by over $1 million.

It doesn’t just prohibit marriage, but also any other form of relationship recognition. There are both gay and straight people who will lose domestic partnership benefits that were available in some cities.

All I can say is that this totally sucks. However, I’ve lived through similar before. In 1992 Colorado passed a constitutional amendment (2) which made it expressly legal to discriminate against gay, lesbian, or bisexual people. This was struck down in every court hearing including the US Supreme Court (Romer v. Evans). That case created some important precedent which may apply to the North Carolina case, which I hope gets filed.

In Colorado, the campaign against Amendment 2 had, in secret, a legal team working on a lawsuit in case A2 should pass. When it did, the team were ready with filings of injunctions and hearings. It took a lot of work and many court hearings, but ultimately A2 was removed, along with many similar state laws.

Take heart: with effort, it gets better. And thank you for your support, Justin. We didn’t have as much in the ’90s.

This meme means basically nothing. Every person I know who is against gay marriage also thinks God created different races on purpose and intended them to stay separate.
