Christian TV puppeteer arrested for plot to eat children

Ronald Brown, 57, was arrested in Largo, FL. He is accused of some really gruesome stuff, including plots to cook and eat a boy in his Sunday school class.

I recognized him immediately from flipping through the channels, pausing to gawk at shows like his – Joy Junction – on the Christian Television Network. Here’s a rather creepy clip from his show making the rounds:

Tampa Bay Times has an incredible account on this developing story. Excerpt:

Brown had ties to a wide array of children’s programs in the Tampa Bay area. In addition to the Gulf Coast Church, officials for the Tampa Bay Rays, the Pinellas County School District, the Christian Television Network, the city of Largo and Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services, among others, all said he had been hired or volunteered as a performer, instructor or mentor.

He has no criminal record in Florida, which helps explain his frictionless association with these groups, many of which routinely perform background checks.

“We’re incredibly shocked and saddened by the news,” Gulf Coast Church pastor Randy Morris said in an interview Tuesday from Orlando, where he was attending a conference. “It’s a very sobering thought that he’s been around our congregation for years. The charges against him are mind-boggling.”

The affidavit describing Brown’s extensive Internet chats about eating children is grotesque, even by the jaded standards of child abuse investigators. Brown and Arnett were discovered during an international child pornography crackdown that has led to 40 arrests in six countries. The pair’s exchanges stood out to investigators.

“In my time here at this agency,” Feinstein said, “I’ve never seen anything this gruesome.”

Using online monikers that investigators traced to their computers, Brown and Arnett discussed killing — what they called “snuffing” — children as young as 2. Arnett described what different human body parts tasted like, roasted or cooked in a skillet, according to the complaint.

In one chat cited in the complaint, Arnett described drowning a little girl, and in another, he and Brown excitedly talked about a photo, shared by Arnett, of a 3-year-old girl being strangled.

“That’s how I would enjoy doing” the unidentified boy from Gulf Coast Church, Brown said.

Morris, the church pastor, said the parents of the boy are “shocked and perplexed” by what federal authorities say Brown wanted to do to their son. “They’re just reeling. It’s very difficult for them to hear,” Morris said.

He would not identify the boy or disclose his age, and said he is not sure if the boy himself has yet been made aware of the charges against Brown.

Federal authorities have presented no evidence that Brown actually harmed children. But the criminal complaint against him refers to two previous run-ins with local police that did not lead to charges.

In 1998, a Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy stopped Brown for a traffic violation and observed boy’s underwear between his front seats. Brown said he used the underwear to dress his puppets.

In 2010, Largo police were called to Brown’s house by a neighbor who had suspicions about his habit of driving boys around. No arrest resulted.

Brown worked for years for the Christian Television Network in Largo, the state’s oldest Christian broadcasting station. He performed with puppets on a Captain Kangaroo-style show called Joy Junction. In one episode, a video excerpt of which is available online, he operates a puppet that talks disdainfully about how some bad kids tried to show him pornography.

Sadly, I noticed that the Tampa Bay story has received 32 “LOL’s” from their social plugin. This is disgusting. Please don’t do that shit here.

Also – this man is clearly a creeper. In no way do I think his alleged crimes are motivated by his religion. The agents recovered child pornography. Every career field that involves being around children attracts sexual predators. The religious organizations who employed Brown obviously need to cooperate fully. If they were shown to have covered up any previous allegations, then litigation and public outrage are quite called for. Otherwise, please don’t use this as a straw-man, “look they caught another Christian leader being an evil bastard!”

Statistically speaking, he was likely arrested by Christians, and likely prosecuted by Christians for threatening the lives of young Christians. This is a bad human who happened to be a Christian. Remember the atheist who took hostages at the Discovery channel? Was that “just another evil atheist bastard?” No.

UPDATE

It looks like Christian Television Network has really dropped the ball here. Ronald Brown’s children show is still on the air!

UPDATE #2

Ronald Brown has a revolting public facebook page. I’m asking all of you to help me remove a photograph of young boy he oozed over.

How long will CTN continue to cooperate with authorities? How soon will they start stonewalling and claiming special protections due to their religious nature? If this turns into something like what happened at State Penn or the RCC, then they deserve to be called out on it.

I have only raped and molested children. Never have I eaten or thought about them. This man is very sick.

It’s a troll post, guy. He’s using the name of a known internet asshole. Just google the name he’s posing as.

        • Justin Griffith

I did. I contacted the CORRECT police department with his real IP. I bet that troll is furiously deleting stuff from 4chan.

OMG! He lives under an intersection! Mole people! Mole people are coming to get us!!

in case you didn’t catch it in his response it’s called sarcasm.

        • Justin Griffith

I like your gender neutral ‘mole people’… most would have settled on molemen. +1 ARPANET for you.

This is absolutely disgusting. Reading this post made me nearly vomit. I can’t fathom the mind of someone who entertains the thought of eating a child.

I don’t know how many showers it’s going to take to feel clean again.

    • Blue Duck

I’m right there with you Tony. I never imagined something like this – it scares me to think what sick, depraved, frightening people are out there. And some of them can seem so ‘normal’ – there is a comment on PZ’s thread from a person who says he has worked with Brown in the past, and he seemed like a nice affable guy to work with. Never would have guessed such darkness lurked inside him.

I’m gonna go hug my kid now. And look for some brain bleach…..

  • ‘Tis Himself

    This is pure depravity.

  • http://offseasontv.blogspot.com BrianX

We can only hope he’s never actually killed anyone. However, at his age, it seems sickeningly likely that he must have left a body trail…

    • ed

      yeah, one has to wonder…

THE model of single male obsessing with children at his age is enough for me to demand evaluations of his religious employers & co-workers…. xians usually mate other xians & pair off to breed/adopt more xian children….. RCC priests ARE EXPECTED TO BE CELIBATE while all other xian religious activists should be evaluated for pedophilia & abuse of women…. MR Rogers was a kid tv personality & Presbyterian minister…. gotta wonder, just don’t give this perpetrator a theological pass until his motives and comrades are fully investigated, all such religious connections Jewish, Christian, Black Muslim & any minority faith communities he’s been allowed access to

    • Blue Duck

It’s off topic but Mr Rogers was married & had 2 sons. So far I’ve never run across any rumors of Mr Rogers being ‘hinky’ in any way.

    • Alverant

I have to disagree. There are adult males who like children. Not in the disgusting, abusive, pedo way or worse either. I’m talking about men who like their energy, imagination, optimism and want to make their lives better so they can be better adults. They are the teachers, mentors, coaches, councilors, etc that we need. We need to stop equating “liking kids” = pedophile unless there is sufficient cause to suspect otherwise.

” This is a bad human who happened to be a Christian. Remember the atheist who took hostages at the Discovery channel? Was that “just another evil atheist bastard?” No.”

Ya know, these comparisons always just piss me off.

HELL YES, this evil bastard should be associated with his religion for what he did (or wanted to do) to those kids. Atheists do not pretend to be morally superior to others. We are not hypocrites (about religion, anyway). We claim no moral superiority except, perhaps, for being honest about the non-existence of omnipotent invisible men in the sky.

So yes, goddammit, every singe time one of those stupid bastards do something that is wholly against their claimed religion, we should publicize it wide and far and help remove the “moral superiority” people automatically associate with religious people.

    • Justin Griffith

I see what you are saying. Thanks for the dialog, but I disagree with you here. Your tactic is likely only going to generate a No True Scotsman. “No true Christian would conspire to eat young children…” Perhaps on a face to face / one on one level you can explain that fallacy too.

Most Christians who would see that perhaps online wouldn’t even comment, or at most leave a single drive-by comment (No True Scotsman, likely.)

      • http://confessionsfromthepeanutgallery.blogspot.com/ YankeeCynic

In all honesty, one of the best responses you can use to that is to then bring up Joseph Stalin and argue that he was No True Scotsman either. You’ll get two basic responses:

        1) They’ll agree with you, reluctantly. That, of course, is a small minority.

        2) They’ll argue against you. Let them. In doing so, they’ll accidentally create your response for you, because they’ll likely employ their own version of the No True Scotsman rebuttal.

      • Mariah

Actually, I believe it’s biblical to eat children. Doesn’t Yaweh say he will cause the people to eat their children?

  • http://confessionsfromthepeanutgallery.blogspot.com/ YankeeCynic

I’ve mentioned this in other posts about Brown, but I think this is a great example as to why the whole “atheists = immoral; religious = moral” perception that floats around out there is actually quite harmful. The automatic access that a guy like Brown gets because he’s openly religious helped provide him the placement and access he needed.

Only by doing away with the idea that you have to be religious to be moral can we take away that kind of intellectual top-cover.

    • Justin Griffith

      Excellent point.

  • didgen

Why would the reporter even ask if the boy had been informed? Like that is something any child should ever hear, that some sick monster targeted them for death and to be eaten. Hopefully the boys name will never get out.

    vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

You seem to be missing something here. The man was presenting himself as, and gaining access to children as a result of, being a Promoter of Christianity; the religion, the ethics and morals, and the general world-view held by Christianity. So when it turns out that he is practicing a lifestyle that is not only in direct opposition to the very things he is preaching against, but that by being a purchaser of child pornography is **an active participant in the abuse and rape of children** – we won’t even speculate as to whether or not he’s actually done it to physical bodies himself – it is not only proper, it is absolutely **essential** that his connection to preaching the values of a “Christian” morality be pointed out. It is anything but a “straw man”. It is the very heart of the matter – that people like this **hide behind** and **exploit** their religious affiliation in order to gain access to the tools of their crimes.

Nobody says “just another evil atheist bastard”, because chances are the person wasn’t devoting their careers to telling people the “right” and “moral” way they should live their lives.

    • Justin Griffith

He also worked in many secular surroundings… Tampa Bay MLB games, public schools… What the fuck did his religion have to do with anything there? It could have been anybody’s kids there.
