I’m being ‘infantile’ because ‘I want to murder christians’

James Delts read my blog post about a ridiculous person claiming that atheists were on the verge of publicly executing all the Christians in America. He weighed in with this blistering anecdote:

what a shower of bigots you are. Some here have even demanded they that christians be murdered here, so thats it, its ok just to murder someone because they have different beliefs and disagree with abortion, so you can be entertained. How the hell can you call for people to be killed? I thought you atheists where meant to be tolerant… If thats your view don’t be surprised if you get the same treatment back. Amazed you nuts all want to execute christians, just shows how infantile you all are, cant bear non-conformism.

-James Delts

The rare double fail appears!

Obviously we don’t want to ‘execute Christians’. There were a few extremely obvious snarks in the comment section that any rational person would see as such. Take a look.

Honestly, I wish some of us would be more careful about violent hyperbole even when jokes seem obvious to all. I say this mostly because of people like this guy who purposely twist and spin this stuff.  Occasionally this context-removal quote mining game attracts national press, like when Fox News inspired efforts to get Rock Beyond Belief canceled over a metal / punk band’s lyrics (that were intentionally misrepresented by a cyber-stalker that out ranks me by a lot).

Atheists simply don’t do this. Certainly not ‘in the name of atheism’, for all of you Pol Pot / Stalin trolls.

Readers may remember the very specific targeted death threats that my family has received. Fox News fans were also recently calling for murder – and even rape – for all of us who work at American Atheists. Did you hear about the soldier who was murdered for being an atheist? The prosecutors know this was the motive, but declined to call it a hate crime.

Threats of Rape and Murder of American Atheists from Fox News viewers

Honestly, I wish some of us would be more careful about violent hyperbole even when jokes seem obvious to all.

In case my comment was one of those (and I tried very hard to construct the joke in a way that included no actual threat of violence), I apologise.

    • Justin Griffith

None of the comments required *apology*. It’s clear to any rational observer that any references were in pure jest. I’m talking about strategy… troll-proofing your statements etc.

      • F

No such thing as troll-proof, but I could have simply not written what I did.

        But that’s a great construct:

        1. Make batshit-crazy claim.

        2. Wait for/notice someone mocking said claim.

        3. Claim this as proof of original claim. (Profit!)

But – won’t somebody please think about the lions!

I would, but I prefer to think of the New England Patriots.

Funny, I didn’t think the proper term for a grouping of bigots was a shower. Must have something to do with the days when it was old rich white men sitting around a steam room and talking about the world, like the drunkenships of cobblers, hastinesses of cooks, and those observances of hermits (seriously, who invents the name for a group of hermits?).

I for one haven’t seen any demands for Christians to be murdered, except by Muslims and other Christians. And even the Christians that don’t send death threats still maintain that we’re going to spend the rest of eternity being tortured as an inherent part of their religion. In the face of that, I’d say the atheist community has shown an incredible amount of tolerance.

I think one of the best things would be to make sure people notice the threats against you and others. I doubt anyone could get away with it, but a billboard of nothing but these people threatening other people’s lives in the name of Yahweh. That kind of image, like a policeman siccing a dog on a civil rights protestor in the 50s or 60s, would perhaps expose some of the lunacy of these people in wanting to kill someone for upholding the Constitution.

Funny, I didn’t think the proper term for a grouping of bigots was a shower.

It is if you’re inferring that they’d like to reopen the showers.

I would suggest these as other potential collective nouns:

      a lowbrow of bigots

      an incest of bigots

      a jackboot of bigots

      a lynchmob of bigots

    a shower of bigots

    GOATS ON FIRE!

Some here have even demanded they that christians be murdered here,

Dude, what goes on in your house is your problem, but I would suggest calling the police.

How the hell can you call for people to be killed?

I, too, have serious problems with that, but who the hell are you talking to? (BTW, it’s OK to call for gay people or residents of other countries to be killed, right?)

I thought you atheists where meant to be tolerant… If thats your view don’t be surprised if you get the same treatment back.

I think you have something backwards and also incorrect in there. Better check your sources and your thinking machinery.

Amazed you nuts all want to execute christians, just shows how infantile you all are, cant bear non-conformism.

Never mind that Christians are the conformists who demand conformity (frequently when it is illegal, often when it is none of their damned business). But I never realized how murderous infants were. I don’t think I’ll be having any kids now; thanks for the info. If you can, just go ahead and show me which atheists demanded the execution of Christians, exactly what they said and where, and to whom did these atheists make this demand?

(Was it me mocking the original “Christians will be ‘exicuted’” post? I made no demand, I said I hoped it would happen so we could stop hearing how it was about to happen. Any time now. Of course, the easy way would be to simply stop yelling stupid, baseless allegations (does this even rise to the level of an allegation?) all over the place.

      Oh. I’ve done it again.

Hypocrisy is inherent in Christianity. How else to explain the all loving deity that won’t show himself but will torture you forever if you don’t believe in him, even if you were born nowhere near where his believers are? Or saying “We are no good, sinning pieces of crap…but we get to live forever in a perfect paradise, unlike you evil people who think we’re all just flawed beings that aren’t inherently evil.”

Kinda like this amendment that is going to be voted on here in Florida in November (if the sample ballot is anything to go by).

I’ll put the text down. Y’all should be able to figure out the problem.

        “Religious Freedom

Proposing an amendment to the State Constitution providing that no individual or entity may be denied, on the basis of religious identity or belief, governmental benefits, funding or other support, except as required by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, and deleting the prohibition against using revenues from the public treasury directly or indirectly in aid of any church, sect, or religious denomination or in aid of any sectarian institution.”

By the way, does anyone know a better place to plaster this to draw some attention to it?

Infants are evil: check it out over at http://freethoughtblogs.com/reasonabledoubts/2012/10/11/episode-107-are-we-born-depraved/

don’t let the cute baby introducing the article …..kill you.

As for this delts guy…looks like a whole lotta projection to me.

As an Army recruiter, I do need infants for my infantry.
