Center For Inquiry shows support for Foxhole Atheists

I was just contacted by Lauren Becker,VP and Director of Outreach of the illustrious Center For Inquiry. Many of you are probably familiar with CFI's history of combating pseudoscience and its proponents. The Center for Inquiry, and its affiliates, the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and the Council for Secular Humanism, also carry out their work through education, publishing, advocacy, and social services. Lauren offered to throw quite a bit of support our way, even getting us in direct … [Read more...]

Update Beyond Belief

This week will bring big news that will keep our all-volunteer staff busy for a while. It has been  nearly 5 months of learn-as-you-go grass roots activism that has paid off in spades. When we first approached several entities on Fort Bragg, we were how shall I say this? 'Politely laughed away'. Now, when I walk into an office, I'm asked why I didn't start planning this earlier! To which, I point out, "I had trouble getting by that guy at the front desk over there, the one who was politely … [Read more...]

Yahweh or the Highway: Mandatory Army Spiritual Fitness

I'm sure that most readers are aware of the aspects of Spiritual Fitness that Rock Beyond Belief has taken issue with. Notably, the Billy Graham Evangelical Association's proselytism on a grand scale, and the mandatory Soldier Fitness Tracker that foxhole atheists fail because they are spiritually unfit. But the powers that be always argue that the word 'Spiritual' doesn't mean 'religious' at all! Well I've decided to take this issue to an online blog (you're reading it.) On the heels of the … [Read more...]

MASH : Official Meetup for Military Atheists & Secular Humanists (Civilians Too)

Military Atheists & Secular Humanists Fort Bragg, NC M*A*S*H MASH is a meetup group launched a few days ago by my wife, Tianna, with the help of some of the most influential local non-theists. We are hopeful that with the recent positive exposure that our issues and groups have been getting, that a lot more soldiers, spouses, and military-town workers will come forward in the spirit of Richard Dawkins' Out Campaign. If you live anywhere near Fort Bragg, please join up! (It's 100% free.) … [Read more...]

How a non-theist Soldier fails mandatory Spirituality test

Ed Brayton's popular ScienceBlog: Dispatches From the Culture Wars has been very nice to Rock Beyond Belief. Ed has posted about what we are trying to do with our festival, and has even graciously agreed to emcee the event. Since I broke the dreadful Soldier Fitness Tracker survey story last week, a lot of attention has been devoted to that topic all over the internet. Ed's latest article about that story sparked some interesting commentary that made me realize that people didn't understand how … [Read more...]

Foxhole Atheist Gets ‘A’ Tattoo for Christmas

I found a good way to spend some of the money that I would have spent on Christmas presents... Rock Beyond Belief's upcoming festival at Fort Bragg draws a lot of inspiration from the Out Campaign, launched by Richard Dawkins. Via Out Campaign: The OUT Campaign allows individuals to let others know they are not alone. It can also be a nice way of opening a conversation and help to demolish the negative stereotypes of atheists. Let the world know that we are not about to go away and that … [Read more...]

Foxhole Atheist volunteers to take 24 hour duty on Christmas

In the U.S. Army, just about every unit has a headquarters of some sort. This headquarters must be manned at all times by at least two or more soldiers (depending on the building / unit). Typically, there is a rotating roster of soldiers that have to pull a 24 hour shift. Including Christmas Day. It just so happens that one of the more religious people in my unit, a devout Mormon with a large family, got selected for today's shift. As a former Christian, I really understand the importance of … [Read more...]

‘Soldier Fitness Tracker’ Spiritual questions now available

Two days ago, when I broke the story about the Soldier Fitness Tracker survey, I had to paraphrase the 'Spiritual' questions from memory. My recollection was mostly spot on, but I couldn't remember all of them. I was unable to retake the test myself, so I had no way to look them up word for word. As a consequence, a minor aspect of this story was transposed due to my paraphrasing. I previously listed:  “I feel connected to a being that is greater than me." as one of the questions. This was … [Read more...]
