Army’s insane Virtual Spiritual Fitness Center gets remade by atheists

Jason Torpy, president of MAAF, sent out a request for some visibility on his remake of the Army’s insane Virtual Spiritual Fitness Center. I thought that was a pretty fun idea. I remember telling Jason in late March about the ridiculous website. We both kept finding more and more crazy stuff. Remember, this is brought to you by the same department that brought you the *mandatory* Spiritual Fitness testing and remedial training. You, remember… the stuff that has ‘nothing to … [Read more...]

Atheist singers wanted for National Anthem on a large military base

Can you sing? Do you want to support the troops with your voice? Are you free on March 31st, 2012? My awesome production manager, Chip Matthews, just sent me this. "Seeking vocal artists for an a capella group rendering of the  National Anthem. Please have experience singing in a group without musical accompaniment. Auditions will be held at a time and place to be announced. Those chosen will perform the National Anthem for the opening of the Rock Beyond Belief Concert. A soldier … [Read more...]

College professor assaulted by Army veteran who was ‘sent by god’

Or not. There is a really dumb viral email / Facebook post making its rounds (again) about a presumably atheist professor and a military veteran. It's one of those sappy stories that grandma might flood your email box with. Many veterans and active duty service members in the MASH Facebook group commented on the resurgence of the story. This time there are a few variations, but the story goes like this: ...a college Professor stood on his chair and said, "If your imaginary friend really … [Read more...]

Keep evangelism and politics out of my military funeral, sign this.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the fabrication of a controversy surrounding military funerals for veterans in Texas (my home state). Three Congressmen from Texas are in the middle of a deceptive media blitz. They are ‘standing up for’ a few private groups who like to officially incorporate their Christian prayer and ceremonies at the funerals of military veterans. The problem is, well… there is no problem! There is no ban of mentioning 'God' or 'Jesus' at funerals for veterans. These … [Read more...]

Military Atheists fight for your rights, please return the favor

***Seeking pictures of foxhole atheists*** I've got a special project coming up that requires a few pictures of very out foxhole atheists. Candidates need to be willing to appear on a patriotic poster, potentially to be hung in a government building. I need high end resolution (but nothing ridiculous... don't jam my poor deployment internet connection with 10MB pictures). This is a draft (click to embiggen) Please post your pictures in the MASH group on Facebook if you want to submit … [Read more...]

Army Chaplaincy’s Spiritual Resilience e-book removed from Amazon

The Army's controversial mandatory Spiritual Fitness testing and training has left a trail of confused defenders who are not all on the same page. They didn't all 'get the script' when it comes to the constitutional implications of  their program. Some say Spiritual Fitness and its interchangeable pseudonym Spiritual Resilience, is merely referring to 'Team Spirit' or 'Human Spirit'.  Most of its proponents, however, correctly assert that the concept is firmly rooted in religion. Maybe this … [Read more...]

There are only atheists in foxholes.

I just finished reading J. Anderson Thomson's why we believe in god(s). When I saw this, I knew I had to share it. A few months ago, MASH Fort Bragg hosted J. Anderson Thomson for our monthly speaker series. It was brilliant and engaging, and quite a few people showed up.   He didn't even flinch when I told him that our group was forced to meet in our member's houses. We are still banned from meeting on post until approved by the Chaplaincy (now 7 months into the process...) We're … [Read more...]

Local groups like MASH are the way forward for permanent change

In early January this year, a handful of us started the Military Atheists & Secular Humanists (MASH) local group at Fort Bragg. This was our first meeting: It's open to soldiers, families, and civilians around Fayetteville / Fort Bragg, NC. [Join - free!] By February we began the process of integrating into the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF), as Jason Torpy had expressed his long-standing desire to expand his MAAF-Network. So we started working together on … [Read more...]

Working With Chaplains and Not Against Them

Some of my greatest allies in the fight for atheists and humanists gaining acceptance in the Chaplaincy actually comes from Chaplains. It's difficult to write about many of these Chaplains, or other officers that support these efforts. They tend to get worried about publicity and things of that nature. This is one of the reasons why some readers may get the false impression that the entire chaplaincy is out to get us. Don't get me wrong, there are things that desperately need to be … [Read more...]
