UPDATED: Delusions of Relevancy…

UPDATE (original report below)Todd Starnes has produced a followup report where, despite an inaccurate and intentionally misleading headline, he exhibits a temporary bit of sanity by reporting exactly what I stated in my original report.  Starnes admits that the Army did not categorize the AFA as a hate group and that the slideshow presentation was locally produced without input from official policy or higher leadership.  Read for yourself here:Pentagon admits Christian ministry is not a … [Read more...]

the fallacy of martyrdom at Fort Hood Texas..

fort hood

At about 1:55 pm today (August 28th, 2013), the long nightmare that Fort Hood (and the nation) has endured finally got closure.  It's a death sentence for MAJ Nidal Hassan and a victory for the so many decent, innocent people who suffered such grievious harm at his hands.I was in the court room for the prosecution's masterful closing arguments and was there when the verdict was read.  Hasan never took his eyes off the panel president as she read the verdict and once read, he slightly nodded a … [Read more...]

So, this post really has nothing to do with atheism, or the military, except as it relates to the fact that I was traveling home from the Secular Student Alliance's 2013 eastern conference in Columbus, Ohio this past weekend and I did a talk there that at least was partly related to the military.  Quick word about the SSA conference:  I can't say enough great stuff about the SSA and their conference. It was a truly amazing experience and being located in the same place as all those young, s … [Read more...]

How a Sitting Congressman And a Retired General Are Trying to Destroy Religious Freedom under the guise of Religious Freedom

Congressman Fleming

I'm sure many of you are now aware that there was a press conference yesterday. It was filled with lies, half-truths, and sold to the American public as an attempt to sway them into believing that Christians are under attack. You can read it here. These are two of the men pushing this legislation:          The man on the left is retired Lt. General Boykin. He is well-known for his hatred … [Read more...]

Why I Am A Patriot

As we approach another Independence Day, which most Americans celebrate not with flag waving but with copious amounts of grilled hotdogs and cold beer, I can’t help reflecting on what it really means to be a patriot in the United States at this particular time. I consider myself a patriot, even though I am a proud, godless American, and even though it is nearly impossible in our modern culture to separate patriotism from a belief in god(s).So, why do I, an atheist, secularist, and skeptic, c … [Read more...]

Four dimensions and a tree

The Army's justification for the Soldier Fitness Tracker keeps reading from two scripts that contradict each other. One group claims that "Spiritual Fitness" has nothing to do with religion. Rather, it's talking about "human spirit" or "team spirit". Obviously, this backtracking is due in large part to the unconstitutional nature of requiring such a test. See: Article VI, paragraph 3, U.S. Constitution. The other group can't stop talking about religion, and they even opened up an … [Read more...]

Foxhole Atheists are fighting for your rights, please return the favor.

Pleased to meet you, FTB!I'm a foxhole atheist. Though I do not speak on behalf of the DoD in any way, I am an active duty Sergeant in the U.S. Army, currently deployed. We are the last untapped demographic in the Out Campaign. The negative stereotypes, myths, and misunderstandings that are universally applied to atheists in America are even more intense in the military. It's because many of us have been too afraid of retribution, and jeopardizing our careers to even come out and say "I … [Read more...]

Rock Beyond the Bubble

Last week we posted a link to an article on our Facebook page entitled, "What is Facebook Hiding From You?" and it touched off a string of thought provoking comments and ideas so we thought it would be worth a closer look.   The article discusses the filter bubble - a curious problem that occurs when Internet searches yield results based upon your likes and preferences, thus shielding you from information that doesn’t confirm your previously established viewpoint.Whether or not you realize it, … [Read more...]
