A letter from Kathleen Johnson, VP at American Atheists concerning DOMA and the Military

I received this letter from Kathy earlier today. It touched me and I felt compelled to share it. Back in February, I became aware of the tragic story of Tracy Johnson, who was left widowed when her wife, Donna Johnson, was killed on active duty while serving in Afghanistan.  The Johnson’s, while legally married in their home district, were partners in a marriage that was not, and could not, be recognized by the Department of Defense due to that pernicious bit of legislation known as th … [Read more...]

It Appears Christian Supremacist Jonathan C. Dowty May Have Been Brought to Justice for Criminal Activity

For years, Major Jonathan C. Dowty has used his rank and his blog, Christian Fighter Pilot, to spread a message of hate and sedition.  Through that blog he regularly decried the terror he lived under...as a Christian being forced to serve with homosexuals.  He actively harassed subordinates, many of them clients of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, that did not conform to his "spiritually transformed military, with ambassadors for Christ in uniform, empowered by the Holy Spirit."  He di … [Read more...]

Even the Chaplains are afraid of the Fundamentalist Christians

Yes even the chaplains...I received one of my frequent emails from Mikey Weinstein over at MRFF. MRFF has been demonized constantly by the religious right in the last few weeks as being a hate organization and it couldn't be further from the truth. They've been nominated for NUMEROUS Nobel Peace Prizes and just recently were accepted into the CFC's donation drive. The CFC is the Combined Federal Campaign. Every year the command is required to give everyone in the military an opportunity to … [Read more...]

“You’re the first Atheist I’ve ever met”

Introductions are necessaryMy name is Casey Leavings and I am an active duty AIr Force member. I've been in for almost ten years and I have been an out and proud atheist for eight. I have been fortunate enough to have never been forced into the corner for my lack of beliefs. When I heard about the extreme pressures that others in uniform have been put under for holding the same beliefs I adhere to, I felt that I had no choice but to step into the activist movement and the blogosphere. These … [Read more...]

Atheism Ruining Military Careers pt. 3 — Vindicated: USMA Officer Upholds Tradition of Christian Privileging in the Military

The West Point Cadet"Truth is generally the best vindication against slander." - Abraham Lincoln  Since my resignation from West Point, one of the most frequently asked questions sent my way has been whether or not I have any regrets. Certainly, I have spent a few minutes contemplating the potential alternative timelines that could have come to be if I had stayed. But, no, I do not regret my decision. Countless events, observations and conversations since then have left me … [Read more...]

Atheism Ruining Military Careers!? pt. 2

The fear isSo many people have come to thank me for coming out as not only an atheist in the military but an activist as well. I’ve heard harrowing stories about how some people have had their careers completely sidelined due to the fact that they are atheists. I wanted to convey some of those stories now. When I am able and when those people are willing I will divulge that information. However, many of these people are still on active duty and afraid to come out. They fear retribution even m … [Read more...]

Atheists are brave in war but not in life

According to someSo sometimes I will listen to talk radio on the AM stations. You know, the ones that play Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, and the always comical Glen Beck. I don't actually listen to those shows most of the time because I feel like my brain is melting...but I do listen to some of the local shows. The local AM shows dial down the rhetoric and are sometimes quite informative...if not a bit too conservative for my tastes.Regardless I was listening to a station and they were talking … [Read more...]
