Doomsday prophet admits to buying influence at Marine Corps base

The Marine Corps Times just released an outstanding story about us! Seriously... this is simply good reporting. Two national atheist groups, and one advocating religious freedom, have complained to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus that officials at Camp Pendleton, Calif., continue to deny them access to the base while giving “preferential treatment” to Christian religious organizations, including a controversial church they say is steeped in “doomsday theology” and embroiled in sexual-abuse … [Read more...]

Marine Corps heavily supports a doomsday sect in CA, why?

SAN DIEGO, CA – Over the past decade, the local Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa has had unprecedented access to Marines at Camp Pendleton. Despite their controversial end-times message and history of sex scandals, the group has co-sponsored several high-profile concerts and other events with the approval of local Navy and Marine Corps commanders. Comprised of hundreds of congregations, Calvary Chapel is a large organization in crisis. Their founder, Chuck Smith, famously predicted the end of the … [Read more...]

PZ does it

PZ does 'it'...? By 'it' I mean 'PZ supports the troops', and not just his son who is an officer in the US Army. Paul Loebe is a foxhole atheist in the United States Marine Corps. Paul is leading a small group of people toward the front line of a subterranean culture war that the evangelicals have been waging in the US Military for decades. That small group is growing. PZ Myers joined the lineup for Rock Beyond Belief 2 in San Diego, CA - Summer 2013. I thought that the first festival … [Read more...]

Jesus, Camp Pendleton! 2nd foxhole atheist festival announced

My name is Paul Loebe and I am a Marine Sergeant. I am stationed at Camp Pendleton and I am an atheist. I'm working on this: In the beginning I spent a quarter century of my life heavily involved in church as a Bible-thumping believer. Then came the fateful day when I began to compare the teachings of the Bible alongside historical and scientific data and my path towards recognizing my cognitive dissonance began. Needless to say the mindless drivel that guides religious faith fell apart … [Read more...]

Surprisingly, 39 percent of Marines in this platoon are nonbelievers

These Marines are stationed at Camp Pendleton. This platoon is in an artillery ground combat unit. Names are withheld. Here is some more information from the source: I didn't get to ask the two Lieutenants and my other Sgt but I know they are religious. As I stated before there were 7 avowedly open atheists, 1 agnostic, 1 no preference (his description made him an agnostic), 3 Jedi (1 serious, 2 atheists joking around), 2 protestant Christians and 2 Catholics who admitted to me (because … [Read more...]

Fox News bears false witness about the Camp Pendleton cross

The Camp Pendleton cross was simply illegal, and the Marine Corps quickly did the right thing and had it removed requested a legal review. (There is an almost identical story where a cross was indeed removed at Camp Marmal very recently. I wonder how that legal review is going to turn out at Camp Pendleton... come on leadership - get ahead of this. Take this cross down too.) Existing and long-standing military regulations specifically ban this. No atheists 'sued'. A mistake was corrected and … [Read more...]
