The First Amendment: What Argument?

I've been spending a lot of time studying the Constitution, lately. I really like that document and I think it is very nearly the greatest thing ever written. It's mind-blowingly brilliant and, although there were flaws in it, the manner in which it was written and how our government was set up gave it the ability to become great. I guess I shall start with the simplicity of the First Amendment, the bedrock of my own activism. Amendment I ¬†Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment … [Read more...]

Reverend: “What does the military put on gravestones of atheists, a thumbs-down?”

The recent article about mandatory Spiritual Fitness in the Pasadena Sun was overall quite positive. Out of a group of 10 or so religious leaders from various religious preferences, the vast majority were on our side. I'm actually happy that only a few took a stand against us.One of them at least tried to pair his response with the US Constitution, but fell victim to the Army's smoke-screen 'this is about team-spirit' etc. I left a comment containing a thorough refutation. I invited … [Read more...]

Recently killed Al Qaeda spokesman Anwar al-Awlaki was an American citizen

Navy atheist, Zachary Sneddon wrote:Aggressor or not, on foreign soil or not, Anwar al-Awlaki was a natural-born American citizen; he never renounced his citizenship, and that makes him a traitor, not a foreign combatant. Treason is the highest crime in our law code, but it is still a federal crime, and as a citizen he had exactly the same rights and entitlements to a fair and open trial that you or I do. How does THAT make you feel? ¬†-Zachary SneddonThis launched a pretty amazing … [Read more...]
