An Atheist’s Speech for Christians (Todd Stiefel at Fort Bragg)

Todd Stiefel is an influential philanthropist who funds an astounding number of innovative atheist upstart projects. He also has decades of business experience, giving him that rare quality-control that our movement needs. We're forever in debt to him for giving us a chance at the first Rock Beyond Belief. Todd is also an excellent public speaker, and was right at home on our stage. He took the opportunity to direct his speech towards Christians. An atheist's speech for … [Read more...]

The worst song ever was actually by an atheist

Ed Brayton accidentally launched an epic comment thread last week when he discussed his least favorite songs. I hate to tell you all, the worst song of all time is actually by an atheist. Don't avert your eyes. Make yourself watch it. Jimmy Buffett - Fruitcakes http://www.youtube.com/embed/wneCa_yIuzg? I used to work in a used CD store in a sleepy Florida town. Our favorite thing to do was to get buzzed and try to find the worst song in the entire store. We played this game for … [Read more...]

This website is down and you can’t click here

Oh, you fixed it. Anyway, we've been breaking the series of tubes that is our website. So we're upgrading the modem from a paper cup and string all the way to a 2400 baud AOL dedi. To make things interesting, we're doing this around 10PM Eastern (11 Bermuda Triangle Time) on 11/11/11. Wait, that's not interesting. Numerology is dumb. Anyway, this FreethoughtBlogs project is a success, and these types of server upgrades are a testament to it. Most of us are pretty handy with computers. … [Read more...]

How a non-theist Soldier fails mandatory Spirituality test

Ed Brayton's popular ScienceBlog: Dispatches From the Culture Wars has been very nice to Rock Beyond Belief. Ed has posted about what we are trying to do with our festival, and has even graciously agreed to emcee the event. Since I broke the dreadful Soldier Fitness Tracker survey story last week, a lot of attention has been devoted to that topic all over the internet. Ed's latest article about that story sparked some interesting commentary that made me realize that people didn't understand how … [Read more...]

RBB Speaker Ed Brayton on Rachel Maddow

Last month, we announced that Ed Brayton was going to be a speaker at Rock Beyond Belief. As you may know, Ed maintains a high-profile web-presence. Well, he is no stranger to mainstream radio and television either. Earlier this year, on one of his many appearances on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, he was talking about Bart Stupak (D) Michigan. Stupak is a long serving U.S. Congressman who had been at the center of a controversy involving a religious institution/lobbying group's influence on … [Read more...]

Ed Brayton to speak at the Rock Beyond Belief

Ed Brayton is the latest amazing speaker to join the lineup for the Rock Beyond Belief. He currently blogs daily at Dispatches From The Culture Wars blog, hosted on ScienceBlogs. It's tagline is: 'Thoughts from the interface of science, religion, law and culture'. So it's an obvious and natural fit for us. His recent post about us is responsible for us hitting Google News. I'm a fan of his daily 'Dumbass quote of the day' series (and the slightly less often 'Badass quote of the day').  You … [Read more...]
