PBS coverage of Rock Beyond Belief

Check it out! Rachel Medley's soundbites were triumphant and prescient - despite some setbacks RBB faced at getting the Golden Knights to agree to jump. I'm comfortable with my own comments, as well. I've been the victim of unethical editing before, and I'm glad to say this is not one of those times. My favorite part of the report comes from Richard Dawkins' speech. Indeed. To all of the people who thought our festival was offensive, please redirect your anger to the people who … [Read more...]

Prosecutor refuses to pursue murder of atheist soldier as hate crime

I don't have real words for this. This is why we can't back down, and we can't fail. If America needs to have this conversation, so be it. Atheists think about and care about all the same shit you do. We ask all the same questions. We just sometimes have a different answer. Spc. Jose Ramirez was allegedly murdered by his friend Justin Green because he was an atheist. A criminal complaint against the group, shows that Green’s sister believes he killed Ramirez “because Ramirez did not … [Read more...]

Fort Bragg’s MAJ Ray Bradley seeks recognition for humanists

An associated press article that ran in dozens of newspapers nationwide tells the story of US Army Major Ray Bradley. Major Bradley is currently fighting to get 'humanist' on the military's official list of recognized religious preferences. RALEIGH, N.C. - Soldiers who don’t believe in God can go to war with “Atheist” stamped on their dog tags, but humanists and others with various secular beliefs are still officially invisible in the Army. Maj. Ray Bradley is applying to be the … [Read more...]

Death threat: “IT’LL BE PAINFUL…God bless your family in spite of me”

Jason Torpy, President of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF) alerted me to a shocking comment that was submitted to his website: I'm a little different than most Christians. I believe in protecting Christians and Christ's scriptures. I have a radar for people like the slime of Justin Griffith. The only way to fight slime like Justin is to show the narcisist for what he is. Include his childhood history. His parental rearing. His never being taught the Bible or at the … [Read more...]

Fox News bears false witness about the Camp Pendleton cross

The Camp Pendleton cross was simply illegal, and the Marine Corps quickly did the right thing and had it removed requested a legal review. (There is an almost identical story where a cross was indeed removed at Camp Marmal very recently. I wonder how that legal review is going to turn out at Camp Pendleton... come on leadership - get ahead of this. Take this cross down too.) Existing and long-standing military regulations specifically ban this. No atheists 'sued'. A mistake was corrected and … [Read more...]

Army’s insane Virtual Spiritual Fitness Center gets remade by atheists

Jason Torpy, president of MAAF, sent out a request for some visibility on his remake of the Army’s insane Virtual Spiritual Fitness Center. I thought that was a pretty fun idea. I remember telling Jason in late March about the ridiculous website. We both kept finding more and more crazy stuff. Remember, this is brought to you by the same department that brought you the *mandatory* Spiritual Fitness testing and remedial training. You, remember… the stuff that has ‘nothing to … [Read more...]

Local groups like MASH are the way forward for permanent change

In early January this year, a handful of us started the Military Atheists & Secular Humanists (MASH) local group at Fort Bragg. This was our first meeting: It's open to soldiers, families, and civilians around Fayetteville / Fort Bragg, NC. [Join - free!] By February we began the process of integrating into the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF), as Jason Torpy had expressed his long-standing desire to expand his MAAF-Network. So we started working together on … [Read more...]

Working With Chaplains and Not Against Them

Some of my greatest allies in the fight for atheists and humanists gaining acceptance in the Chaplaincy actually comes from Chaplains. It's difficult to write about many of these Chaplains, or other officers that support these efforts. They tend to get worried about publicity and things of that nature. This is one of the reasons why some readers may get the false impression that the entire chaplaincy is out to get us. Don't get me wrong, there are things that desperately need to be … [Read more...]

Frostcall Interviews Justin Griffith, Jason Torpy, Grace Quiroz

Frostcall's Tom and Wendy have been extremely kind to Rock Beyond Belief, devoting several episodes to our project, even before we gained the current momentum we are enjoying. The Frostcall podcast is consistently entertaining, and has enjoyed steadily increasing popularity in the crowded field of atheist radio shows. It's perhaps because of the unique perspective the hosts share, recent de-conversion. Tom and Wendy met and fell in love in a pentecostal church.  Tom was raised an … [Read more...]
