Actually, calling Mikey Weinstein an atheist IS Defamation!

In the news Recently there has been a media flurry surrounding Mikey Weinstein and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. Megyn Kelly, of Fox News, along with James and Shirley Dobson went on a verbal assault of Mikey and MRFF.  Claiming that Mikey was an atheist (he's not) and the MRFF was an atheist organization (it's not) . Now is this a problem? That all depends upon context. 'Atheist' is not defamation Actually... Before you can make an argument as to whether or not … [Read more...]

A short history of RBB, A bit of the future, and a toast to selflessness

It's been really annoying after returning from this final deployment because all the computers I had access to prior were no longer around. So that's been a real doozy. There are also a lot of things going on personally with me as well that have kept me from putting as much time and effort into RBB, which is unfortunate because this is a very important movement. I inherited RBB from Justin Griffith and have taken the lead on it. It was never my intent or end-goal, but it was something I just … [Read more...]

Dear John Letters….

Dear John To whomever you are. There may be some confusion on what it's like to be an atheist in the military. Don't worry! That is okay. I understand. I was a bigoted Christian when I joined the military, too. Fortunately, I've learned what it's like to not judge people based upon some false notion of truth. I'm willing to extend an invitation to you in helping understand that bigotry is wrong. So is lying and intentionally misleading people. Although, I understand mistakes can be … [Read more...]

Why the move?

Click for the classic scene.

The chief motivation for moving the RBB blog to Patheos is to circumvent the increasingly frequent blocking of our site at many military bases. These bases allow similar content from religious perspectives, so it's not just some blanket policy on blogs. Frankly, this is likely to come up again (and again). Even the main website for the festival we launched was blocked by many military bases, despite the event being largely staffed by DoD personnel. Blogging with ferocious activists like Chris … [Read more...]

Camp Pendleton Cornered Into Ceasing All Large Religious Events After a Decade of Violations!

Say WHAAAT!?! When I first contacted Justin about Rock Beyond Belief 2 my primary motivation was to meet other foxhole atheists. I can honestly say there are more of us out there than the numbers truly reveal! Most of us are just content to live and let live. Perhaps, in that, I am the exception to the rule. I've always been the type of guy to challenge the status quo when I knew it was wrong, to stand up for the little guy, and to push back when I saw a bully on the rampage. I never thought … [Read more...]

Check in from the Middle East

So back in the States... I've been gone for quite a while and am always flabbergasted at the ridiculous level of nonsense that the American News Media focuses on. Since I've been gone President Obama was reelected, women can serve in combat roles, taxes have been raised on the wealthy, we are coming to terms with our government debt, far too many people have been harmed by gun violence, thousands of innocent civilians are killed by American drones, and do you know what I see on the news for … [Read more...]

US Military will not be building churches in Afghanistan

American Atheists just pulled off a huge win in Afghanistan. This is illegal: Kari Huus at NBC News reports: U.S. military commanders in Afghanistan on Thursday ordered the removal of a steeple and crucifix erected over a remote American base in the Muslim country after a soldier deployed there noted that the symbols violated Army regulations, and could reinforce suspicions that the United States is fighting a holy war. It is unclear how long ago the Christian symbols at the chapel at … [Read more...]

OK Atheists: I reserve the right to circumcise the unsynagogued

That's right, the Oklahoma Atheists podcast hosts, Damion Reinhardt and Chas Stewart, reserve the right to circumcise the unsynagogued. Watch out all you heathen anteaters. Actually, the host's statement wasn't a non-sequiter at all. It an absurdist reduction of a military chaplain's proclamation, "I reserve the right to evangelize the un-churched." That chaplain refused my request for him to stop bothering me and leaving pamphlets on my desk. He left me twice as many pamphlets after … [Read more...]
