Actually, calling Mikey Weinstein an atheist IS Defamation!

In the news Recently there has been a media flurry surrounding Mikey Weinstein and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. Megyn Kelly, of Fox News, along with James and Shirley Dobson went on a verbal assault of Mikey and MRFF.  Claiming that Mikey was an atheist (he's not) and the MRFF was an atheist organization (it's not) .Now is this a problem? That all depends upon context. 'Atheist' is not defamation Actually...Before you can make an argument as to whether or not … [Read more...]

An associated press article that ran in dozens of newspapers nationwide tells the story of US Army Major Ray Bradley. Major Bradley is currently fighting to get 'humanist' on the military's official list of recognized religious preferences.RALEIGH, N.C. - Soldiers who don’t believe in God can go to war with “Atheist” stamped on their dog tags, but humanists and others with various secular beliefs are still officially invisible in the Army.Maj. Another military base, another Nativity Scene – this time in Kentucky.

Foxhole atheists are taking notice of the rapid changes made at Travis Air Force Base nativity scene, spearheaded by Staff Sergeant Dan Rawlings.Fort Campbell needs to rapidly respond to the atheists that want to put up a holiday display there. Early reports are stating that this was put up today. This is an absolutely inappropriate place. This is nowhere near a chapel, which is still inappropriate if they refuse to support an atheist group. Travis AFB officials blocked the efforts of … [Read more...]

Fox News bears false witness about the Camp Pendleton cross

The Camp Pendleton cross was simply illegal, and the Marine Corps quickly did the right thing and had it removed requested a legal review. (There is an almost identical story where a cross was indeed removed at Camp Marmal very recently. I wonder how that legal review is going to turn out at Camp Pendleton... come on leadership - get ahead of this. Take this cross down too.)Existing and long-standing military regulations specifically ban this. No atheists 'sued'. A mistake was corrected and … [Read more...]

Army’s insane Virtual Spiritual Fitness Center gets remade by atheists

Jason Torpy, president of MAAF, sent out a request for some visibility on his remake of the Army’s insane Virtual Spiritual Fitness Center. I thought that was a pretty fun idea.I remember telling Jason in late March about the ridiculous website. We both kept finding more and more crazy stuff. Remember, this is brought to you by the same department that brought you the *mandatory* Spiritual Fitness testing and remedial training. You, remember… the stuff that has ‘nothing to do with religio … [Read more...]

There are only atheists in foxholes.

I just finished reading J. Anderson Thomson's why we believe in god(s). When I saw this, I knew I had to share it.A few months ago, MASH Fort Bragg hosted J. Anderson Thomson for our monthly speaker series. It was brilliant and engaging, and quite a few people showed up. He didn't even flinch when I told him that our group was forced to meet in our member's houses. We are still banned from meeting on post until approved by the Chaplaincy (now 7 months into the process...) We're … [Read more...]

Local groups like MASH are the way forward for permanent change

In early January this year, a handful of us started the Military Atheists & Secular Humanists (MASH) local group at Fort Bragg. This was our first meeting:It's open to soldiers, families, and civilians around Fayetteville / Fort Bragg, NC. [Join - free!]By February we began the process of integrating into the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF), as Jason Torpy had expressed his long-standing desire to expand his MAAF-Network. So we started working together on exp … [Read more...]

Working With Chaplains and Not Against Them

Some of my greatest allies in the fight for atheists and humanists gaining acceptance in the Chaplaincy actually comes from Chaplains. It's difficult to write about many of these Chaplains, or other officers that support these efforts. They tend to get worried about publicity and things of that nature. This is one of the reasons why some readers may get the false impression that the entire chaplaincy is out to get us. Don't get me wrong, there are things that desperately need to be corrected. … [Read more...]
