Military Atheists fight for your rights, please return the favor

***Seeking pictures of foxhole atheists*** I've got a special project coming up that requires a few pictures of very out foxhole atheists. Candidates need to be willing to appear on a patriotic poster, potentially to be hung in a government building. I need high end resolution (but nothing ridiculous... don't jam my poor deployment internet connection with 10MB pictures). This is a draft (click to embiggen) Please post your pictures in the MASH group on Facebook if you want to submit … [Read more...]

There are only atheists in foxholes.

I just finished reading J. Anderson Thomson's why we believe in god(s). When I saw this, I knew I had to share it. A few months ago, MASH Fort Bragg hosted J. Anderson Thomson for our monthly speaker series. It was brilliant and engaging, and quite a few people showed up.   He didn't even flinch when I told him that our group was forced to meet in our member's houses. We are still banned from meeting on post until approved by the Chaplaincy (now 7 months into the process...) We're … [Read more...]

Local groups like MASH are the way forward for permanent change

In early January this year, a handful of us started the Military Atheists & Secular Humanists (MASH) local group at Fort Bragg. This was our first meeting: It's open to soldiers, families, and civilians around Fayetteville / Fort Bragg, NC. [Join - free!] By February we began the process of integrating into the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (MAAF), as Jason Torpy had expressed his long-standing desire to expand his MAAF-Network. So we started working together on … [Read more...]

Working With Chaplains and Not Against Them

Some of my greatest allies in the fight for atheists and humanists gaining acceptance in the Chaplaincy actually comes from Chaplains. It's difficult to write about many of these Chaplains, or other officers that support these efforts. They tend to get worried about publicity and things of that nature. This is one of the reasons why some readers may get the false impression that the entire chaplaincy is out to get us. Don't get me wrong, there are things that desperately need to be … [Read more...]

Rock the Fort Chaplain Is From the Moon, Writes Foxhole Atheist A Letter

Almost 45 days after the last-minute restrictions forced us to cancel our first approach, a fresh comment appeared on that announcement awaiting moderation. I was blown away at what I saw. Read the original wall of text in its embarrassing entirety here. **Update: Cleaned up formatting of this post can be found here** This is a letter from a (very recently) retired Chaplain, Lieutenant Colonel David Druckenmiller who worked on the controversial Rock the Fort event at Fort Bragg. It's mean … [Read more...]

MASH Gets Monster Press Coverage, Foxhole Atheists Organize

Three months ago, I launched the Military Atheists & Secular Humanists (MASH) with the help of a handful of really motivated Soldiers and civilians from the Fort Bragg secular community. This weekend was huge for us. We received an overwhelming level of publicity, and interest is snow-balling. Several major news organizations have been in contact with me over the last few weeks. The Associated Press ran an article on Friday that seems to be plastered everywhere! Update: 7 April 2011: … [Read more...]

Our Friends at Triangle Freethought Society Launch Massive Billboard Campaign

The Triangle Freethought Society is a perfect example of a secular community doing their part to normalize non-belief in America.Perhaps I'm a little biased, because half of their upper echelon joined our event staff. That happened in October, when very few people took us seriously. Our own local secular community, the Fort Bragg chapter of the Military Atheists & Secular Humanists (M*A*S*H) wants to emulate and maybe even piggy-back off the Triangle Freethought Society (TFS). TFS is just … [Read more...]

Demand equal treatment for the Army’s non-religious Soldiers

After last week's hey-maker from Fort Bragg, we were devastated. It was shocking to learn that our festival had been crippled with last-minute restrictions that forced us to shut down. Now it's time to fight back. Please help us stand up to the discrimination facing the non-religious military community. That was the whole point of our festival, and Fort Bragg just took a giant step backwards by reinforcing existing prejudices. They legitimized the proselytizing efforts of the Evangelical … [Read more...]

Foxhole Atheists organize. MASH chapter sprouts in Fort Campbell, Kentucky

Some of you may remember the Military Atheists & Secular Humanists initiative that we launched a few weeks back. Here in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, it's been wildly successful. MASH Chapters are open to military members, spouses / family members, and civilians. Being an atheist in a military town is not always easy. Our goals include: getting officially recognized by the post chaplaincy, and meetings advertised on the master list of services along with the Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, … [Read more...]
