A Thank You Note From an Elementary School Friend

Unknown

I woke up this morning to find this in my inbox from an old friend, Wes, whom I've known since Elementary school: Just wanted to take the time and thank you for being an atheist that doesn't feel the need to bash religion on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Have a friend who I am considering deleting from Facebook for the mere fact that she feels the need to spread hate through being an atheist - and you and I know, that regardless of religious/non-religious affiliation - spreading hate is … [Read more...]

Military A-Week: How to put ATHEIST on your records (all branches)

Yesterday I told you why it was IMPORTANT to stand up and be counted as an "ATHEIST" and not a "NO-REL-PREF". Today, I'm going to tell you how.Army: Walk in to your unit's S-1 office. Ask them to update your ERB or ORB. Tell them you want to fix your religious preference. Tell them you want "ATHEIST". If they say anything about it not being an option, calmly explain that they are mistaken, and to check the list (it's alphabetical for them.)If  you still need more 'proof', here is the re … [Read more...]

“A-week” for the military: Demand ‘ATHEIST’ on your records

Don't back down brothers and sisters. Out of those closets. If you have NO-REL-PREF on your records, you are wrong. Go to S-1 today.You walk right in. Tell them you want to update your records. Tell them your religious preference is wrong. They will type a few things. When they get to the correct screen, they'll ask you what you want instead of NO-REL-PREF. You look them in the eye and tell them "ATHEIST". That's it. Nothing else to it. It takes two minutes."ATHEIST" is on the list, des … [Read more...]

Rapture Ready cockroaches pray that the foxhole atheist festival is cancelled

No apocalyptic doomsayer has ever been correct about doomsayings. It seems that a failed end-times prophecy should logically teach adherents a valuable lesson in gullibility (a word that emphatically is in the dictionary, but unfortunately spelled incorrectly in many dictionaries.)You've heard the saying about cockroaches surviving even a nuclear world war? Well, much like cockroaches, the rapture eschatology continues to thrive despite a few centuries of failed predictions. The word " … [Read more...]

Nervous atheist military family “Will Fort Bragg ‘lose’ my housing application?”

Jennifer Andrews is a military spouse who recently moved to Fort Bragg with her husband Brian. She wrote to me about their experiences getting settled in, and it's quite unsettling.I grew up in the Buffalo area in NY and lived there my entire life, until I married my husband and relocated to Ft Bragg. My first experience with the locals here was at the housing office on post, trying to move into government housing. On our way out the door, the woman asked us if we'd found a church yet.We … [Read more...]

BBC interviews Justin Griffith, foxhole atheist

First off, Kate Dailey at the BBC wrote a great article. When she first approached me, I was envisioning a segment to be aired right before Doctor Who (naturally), but it turns out this was for a print + radio segment. Still, it was a refreshing conversation and I'm grateful for the exposure it generated (plenty!)This is one of the best representations of our public plea for respect in the military community. She covered the upcoming atheist festival on Fort Bragg. We discussed the offensive … [Read more...]

Keep evangelism and politics out of my military funeral, sign this.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the fabrication of a controversy surrounding military funerals for veterans in Texas (my home state). Three Congressmen from Texas are in the middle of a deceptive media blitz. They are ‘standing up for’ a few private groups who like to officially incorporate their Christian prayer and ceremonies at the funerals of military veterans. The problem is, well… there is no problem! There is no ban of mentioning 'God' or 'Jesus' at funerals for veterans. These outside … [Read more...]
