Did a 2-star general just violate that many regs in 30 seconds?

I discovered a video that is probably about to be deleted. The video features a 2-star general stumping for Centurion's Watch - a traveling bible-based marriage retreat aimed at military members. www.youtube.com/embed/yZc41S_BDfA#t=207 "Centurions Watch is a wonderful way that you can help. Any donation or resource that you can give this organization - it's faith-based. It's wanting to keep families together with the stresses and strains of being apart, being in harm's way, risking their … [Read more...]

Oklahoma politician attempting to reinstate Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

State legislator Mike Reynolds is an Air Force veteran. He's also a Southern Baptist, which shouldn't matter at all because he is a politician and not a preacher. But invariably the opposition to gay rights comes from a religious motivation. Not this time though. Apparently Mike Reynolds is motivated because some troops asked him to re-instate the policy. Tulsa World has the story: OKLAHOMA CITY - A bill being proposed by a state lawmaker would reinstitute the controversial "don't ask, … [Read more...]

National Guard advertises on a foxhole atheist’s blog

The National Guard is advertising on a foxhole atheists 'online blog'! These advertisements come from a large ad serving company, obviously. If you know how web advertising works, this is not as 'cool' as it sounds. So forgive me for building up this molehill. This is like the time I saw Military Intelligence jobs being advertised on FriendlyAtheist. … [Read more...]

Cold War account of why Mormons were over-represented as military translators

This is an excerpt from a very funny atheist Army veteran. I had no idea that many Mormons use/used the military as a way to learn languages for their missionary work. It makes sense. Late in her career, she describes being harassed simply for being pregnant or a woman, etc. The harassers were the same religious people who spent so much time trying to convert her. I was in from 1987-1990 during the end of the cold war when interrogators went to language school for a year or so. But … [Read more...]

Who here is offended by religion?

This is another inspirational and informative letter from a New Foxhole Atheist. He already took the oath of enlistment, and expects to ship out to Basic Training soon. His experiences at the regular 'drill' sessions contained a few pink flags. I'm an atheist in the bible belt, and currently serving in the Army National Guard. Reading about Megan Hurtwitt in Texas is really inspiring, it can be really difficult in the bible belt. I too omitted "so help me God" from my oath, and the Marine … [Read more...]

National Guard advertise jobs in Military Intelligence on Friendly Atheist

So yesterday we learned that the National Guard had a sectarian themed recruitment ad. This ad had no indication of being aimed towards potential chaplains - and plausible evidence to the contrary. It featured a soldier's torso with a 'Holy Bible' prominently featured in his possession, with the words "You are needed here." In an bit of epic irony, this just happened on Hemant Mehta's FriendlyAtheist: Hemant has recently switched to the new Patheos meta-site. I've noticed the shift in ad … [Read more...]

National Guard’s new religious ads: “(only some of) you are needed here”

Zachary Sneddon, a U.S. Navy Avionics Technician sent in this screen capture of a new National Guard online advertising campaign. Sneddon explains: "I took this screen capture while browsing; draw your attention to the banner ad to the right of the media window in this picture. It's a recruitment ad for the Army National Guard. The picture is of the torso of a man wearing fatigues with captain's bars and carrying a bible in his hand, one of the ubiquitous Christian "HOLY BIBLE" generic … [Read more...]
