Considering a military career? What every atheist needs to know first.

Dear Justin, I am considering joining the Navy, and would like advice on how to go about it as an atheist. What do I tell the recruiter? Are there atheist chaplains? What do I put on dog tags as my religion? Is being an atheist in the military looked at like being gay/lesbian, in regards to "don't ask don't tell"? I really appreciate your time, and thank you for getting back. - (name withheld) Advice on how to go about as an atheist: Start out strong, out of the closet. Encourage … [Read more...]

Nightly ‘non-sectarian’ prayer aboard USS Abraham Lincoln in Hebrew?

I've been screaming that there is no such thing as 'non-sectarian' prayer for years. There is no universal method of prayer, and many religions don't even have such a thing. Still, the conventional wisdom in the military is that as long as you don't say "Jesus" it's somehow legal for them to pray at you (and force you to hear it and/or stand at attention for it). This came from a field grade officer in the US Navy, and it illustrates exactly this point. Sgt. Griffith, I’m currently … [Read more...]

Navy atheist required to pray, say “Amen”, and feign hatred of atheists

Aron Ra is a prominent atheist on YouTube, and also the new Texas State Director for American Atheists. He and Thunderf00t, and the rest of the gang at the Magic Sandwich Show had me on as a guest just recently. It prompted an anonymous sailor to write in to Aron Ra, who forwarded it to me. He's trying to deal with being in the atheist closet. It's time we all start calling this stuff out every time. If you can't speak out for whatever reason, at least report it to someone like me. I'll … [Read more...]

Navy Atheist forced to permanently cover up a Bad Religion tattoo

You may remember a few months back when SGT Kloberdanz told us about being kicked out of a Dining Facility for wearing a Bad Religion Shirt. Well, along these same lines comes a story from Navy Atheist CTR2 Michael Wheeler. I'm so proud of all the military atheists shedding the (often justified) fear of coming out of the atheist closet by name. As you are about to see, Michael Wheeler slammed the atheist closet door shut a long time ago. And he's pretty funny too. After reading your … [Read more...]

Recently killed Al Qaeda spokesman Anwar al-Awlaki was an American citizen

Navy atheist, Zachary Sneddon wrote: Aggressor or not, on foreign soil or not, Anwar al-Awlaki was a natural-born American citizen; he never renounced his citizenship, and that makes him a traitor, not a foreign combatant. Treason is the highest crime in our law code, but it is still a federal crime, and as a citizen he had exactly the same rights and entitlements to a fair and open trial that you or I do. How does THAT make you feel?  -Zachary Sneddon This launched a pretty amazing … [Read more...]

National Guard’s new religious ads: “(only some of) you are needed here”

Zachary Sneddon, a U.S. Navy Avionics Technician sent in this screen capture of a new National Guard online advertising campaign. Sneddon explains: "I took this screen capture while browsing; draw your attention to the banner ad to the right of the media window in this picture. It's a recruitment ad for the Army National Guard. The picture is of the torso of a man wearing fatigues with captain's bars and carrying a bible in his hand, one of the ubiquitous Christian "HOLY BIBLE" generic … [Read more...]
