Military Discrimination Against Christians??

2_22_450_todd

Fox News columnist Todd Starnes is at it again. Determined to see an anti-Christian bias in the military where none exists, he published this in a post from July 8th, 2013: There is a clear and present danger to religious liberty within the military, says a coalition of groups who believe the Obama Administration is pushing a secular, anti-religious culture on the nation's armed forces."Christians who choose to live out their faith find themselves incompatible with the secular view of this admin … [Read more...]

How to fight back against mandatory prayer and win

Bookmark this one. This letter accidentally became the best walk-through on how to fight back against those mandatory ceremony prayers. For 17 years, every military graduation ceremony I've been to has had an invocation and/or benediction.  This includes schools like: Basic, AIT, PLDC, BNCOC... and BNCOC at Ft. Eustis specifically named Jesus.  I'm an instructor and have attended ceremonies for WLC and an MOS reclassification course that have included prayer…until recently.I'd locked horns w … [Read more...]

While you are praying

The atheist has got your back. (click to embiggen)I'm a big supporter of the Free Exercise Clause, and I would not be against my peers praying - except in two circumstances.1) The forced prayer that is being depicted here.A few times every month, I'm ordered to 'stand at attention' and then 'bow my head' for the chaplain's invocation (read: prayer). The circumstances are entirely secular and overtly bland in nature. I'm talking about retirement ceremonies, change of command … [Read more...]

Dean of Students at Baptist Seminary advises a FAKE chaplain

Russell Moore is the Dean of Students at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Last week, he published an Op-ed in the Christian Post - featuring his reply to 'A Confused Chaplain'.Dear Dr. Moore,I'm a committed evangelical Christian, and also a chaplain with responsibility for people from all sorts of religious backgrounds. I am called on to pray at many functions, with mixed audiences. Some over me are pressuring me not to end my prayers "in Jesus' name" but to instead pray more … [Read more...]

The writing is on the wall at boot camp (literally)

A brand new foxhole atheist sent me a few pictures from his cell phone. He's in 'hell week' or 'reception week' of basic training. In a few days, his phone will be confiscated by his drill sergeants. He'll get it back when he's a soldier. This is Fort Jackson, SC. These posters are not government issued and are not supposed to be up. Since the command is either unaware or more likely - complicit - they've basically established another weird little 'Limited Public Forum'. All points of view … [Read more...]

Nightly ‘non-sectarian’ prayer aboard USS Abraham Lincoln in Hebrew?

I've been screaming that there is no such thing as 'non-sectarian' prayer for years. There is no universal method of prayer, and many religions don't even have such a thing. Still, the conventional wisdom in the military is that as long as you don't say "Jesus" it's somehow legal for them to pray at you (and force you to hear it and/or stand at attention for it). This came from a field grade officer in the US Navy, and it illustrates exactly this point.Sgt. Griffith,I’m currently d … [Read more...]

Atheists in RI,CT will actually show that reason trumps prayer

A national day of prayer is unconstitutional. But it's also pointless, as prayer accomplishes nothing and wastes time. It's quite possible that people pray instead of doing something useful. We're better than that.  A group in New England has a great idea, and instead of prayer they will be accomplishing real world good. 80 people need to give blood from the RI and CT area.Bill Russel of Atheist Humanist Society of Connecticut and Rhode Island writes:The blood drive will be held at t … [Read more...]
