Reddit co-founder’s suicide prompts whitehouse.gov petition

Co-founder of reddit Aaron Swartz hanged himself. The 26 year old was struggling with depression and the fear of decades in prison over what amounts to 'checking out millions of library books'.I signed this petition:Remove United States District Attorney Carmen Ortiz from office for overreach in the case of Aaron Swartz. It is too late to do anything for Aaron Swartz, but those who used the powers granted to them by their office to hound him into a position where he was facing a ruinous … [Read more...]

Co-founder of reddit, Aaron Swartz, hanged himself

Co-founder of Reddit, Aaron Swartz, hanged himself. He was many things, a hacker, a free information activist, a tech guru. The 26 year old was soon to be charged for what amounts to 'checking out millions of library books' from JSTOR. The federal case was on shaky legal footing, but could have netted him decades in prison.JSTOR, did not pursue him in civil court.via: The Washington Post...JSTOR did not press charges once it reclaimed the articles from Swartz, and some legal … [Read more...]

Photo of the planning meeting for those billboards you hate

We need quality control, and that's what Martin Wagner's blog post was all about. I just disagree with him for his sloppy aim, misdirecting his valid criticism. He praised an American Atheists billboard (that he didn't realize was from AA) (EDIT: Michael from the Mid-Ohio atheists explains how we were both wrong about this in his excellent post - the message of this sign is more complicated than we realized), as an example of what AA billboards should look like (instead of 'fail' and ' … [Read more...]

Really, Fort Bragg…Salvation Army is okay, but not atheists?

When Fort Bragg denied our plan to collect canned food at the recent Rock Beyond Belief festival, the news went viral, and was even front-paged at reddit. If you haven't read it already, you really should take a look at that article. I broke down the regulations that their lawyers were 'creatively interpreting' in their pro-starvation policy. But look what just popped up in my email box. That's right...Fort Bragg says it's okay for the controversial and discriminatory Salvation … [Read more...]

Navy atheist came out of the closet on Good Friday

Over the last three weeks I've been hammering home the importance of identifying as an atheist on your records. Most atheists in the military are still under the false impression that it's not allowed. Most of us were told that "No Religious Preference" is all we can get. That hasn't been true for at least a decade. But worse than that, "NO REL PREF" can lead to seriously fucked up consequences.Sometime last month in reddit's atheism comment section, I encountered a reluctant closeted … [Read more...]

Atheists just raised $3446 for homeless veterans

We raised over $1200 and a pickup truck full of canned food for homeless veterans at our after party. An additional $2246 was raised here at the blog, no doubt helped by the reddit community. It was unfortunate that Fort Bragg denied us the ability to do this on post (we could have raised so much more). But it is undeniable that at least some real-world change for the better came as a direct result of our festival. The after-party was a great success. The hotel where we staged the after party … [Read more...]

“Nice chest hair, asshole.” This one’s for you, reddit.

Reddit's atheist community has been extremely kind to the Rock Beyond Belief festival.Without their overwhelming support and pleas for me to keep them informed, I might have given up.But a recent picture in a news story made me think back to a surreal moment on reddit. One of my favorite things that I learned from reddit was how to take criticism. Especially extremely harsh but still funny criticism. The first really jarring experience came from December 2010 - 3 months into planning … [Read more...]

SGT Nicholson and wife get atheist tattoos

Kelly sent me this picture:My husband (SGT Nicholson) and I in Texas while he was stationed at Goodfellow. These are the tattoos we got together. Think you'll appreciate them. Don't mind the drunk guy in the background.Awesome!I've written previously about military atheists getting tattoos. You might want to check out the story about the Navy Atheist who was forced to get his Bad Religion 'cross buster' tattoos covered up. He later got much bigger versions on his back! … [Read more...]
